High-resolution 3K display
The main feature of the Chuwi Hi13 is clearly the high-resolution display. With a display diagonal of 13.5 inches, the resolution is a whopping 3000 x 2000 pixels. This achieves a dot density of 267 DPI, which results in a razor-sharp display. The aspect ratio of 3:2, which is quite unusual for tablets and notebooks, rarely causes scaling problems. Many applications were already adapted to the 3:2 aspect ratio with the release of the Microsoft Surface Book - which has the same display diagonal and resolution. The traditional aspect ratio of 3:2 offers extensive possibilities, especially for those who like to work often with image editing programs. The Chuwi Hi13 covers 100% of the RGB color space. So that you can work outdoors, especially in sunshine, the display achieves a luminance of 480 nits. A comparatively decent value.
Another feature of the IPS display is 10 finger multi-touch support. Chuwi's HiPen H3 Stylus is also supported. This is an active stylus that enables accurate writing and drawing. The pen tip recognizes up to 1024 pressure levels.
Processor and memory
The Chuwi Hi13 has an Intel Apollo Lake Celeron N3450 as the processor. The Celeron N3450 is a continuation of the Intel Atom processor series and is often described as the “Atom Celeron”. Released in Q3 2016, the processor has a total of 4 processor cores with a basic clock speed of 1.1GHz and a maximum of 2.2GHz. The system-on-chip's integrated processor graphics are Intel's HD500 graphics, which enables older game titles such as CS:GO to be played. While the Chuwi Hi13 comes quite close to a Microsoft Surface Book, especially when it comes to the display, the performance of the two tablets cannot be compared under any circumstances. The performance of a Core i5 or i7 of a Surface Book is significantly superior to that of a Celeron N3450.
The memory is equipped with a 4GB LPDDR3 RAM and a 64GB eMMC memory, which is appropriate for the price. An SSD with expansion options would still have been desirable. The internal memory of the Chuwi Hi13 can be expanded using a micro SD memory card.
Wireless, ports and camera
For wireless communication, the tablet supports the WiFi standards 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac. Dual-band WiFi (2.4G and 5G) is therefore no problem. The supported Bluetooth standard is V4.0. “Intel Wireless Display” (WiDi) can be used to stream screen content. The wired connection options include a USB Type-C socket, a micro-USB socket, a 3.5 mm audio output and a micro-HDMI socket. With the separate docking keyboard, the Hi13 can be converted into a notebook. The keyboard itself expands the connection options with two additional USB Type-A sockets.
As with most China tablets, the cameras of the Chuwi Hi13 are also rather secondary. The rear main camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels. The front camera has a maximum resolution of 2 megapixels. Videos and pictures can be recorded with it, but you should not expect fantastic recording quality. Rather, both cameras are suitable for spontaneous video telephony, on which the requirements are not too high.
Design and battery
The tablet measures 34.65 x 22.95 x 1.76 cm and weighs around 1.080 g. In the so-called unibody design, the housing is CNC milled and consists entirely of metal. With a thickness of just 9.2 mm, the tablet is comparatively thin. Including the docking keyboard attached, the tablet converted into a notebook is 16.5 mm thick. There are 2 loudspeakers on each side of the housing. Thus, the Chuwi Hi13 has a total of 4 speakers that promise a voluminous sound. The manufacturer specifies the capacity of the battery as 10.000 mAh and an average runtime of 8 hours.
Conclusion and price comparison
The Chuwi Hi13 is an interesting approach to bring display resolutions beyond 2K to a tablet. Although the hardware is not comparable to a Microsoft Surface Book, you can get a very interesting Windows 315 tablet for about 10 €, which is especially suitable for web surfing, image editing or office work due to the unusual 3: 2 aspect ratio should.
