DJI Mavic 2 Pro

DJI Mavic 2 Pro & Mavic 2 Zoom - drone information

Probably the most advanced consumer drone will soon receive a successor. We are talking about the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, which is to become the new flagship model of the DJI Mavic drone series. At the end of July the drone was to be officially presented, but nothing came of it. Meanwhile, new leaks of a British mail order catalog are circulating, showing not only the Mavic 2 Pro but another model, the so-called DJI Mavic 2 Zoom. Let's take a closer look at what the leaks are about!

DJI Mavic 2 Pro & Mavic 2 Zoom

It is now foreseeable that DJI will present a new Mavic drone this year. For a few weeks, new leaks have been making the rounds that the  DJI Mavic Pro  Successors showed in full bloom. Now a new leak has emerged that gives a detailed look at DJI's new drone. The leak appeared in the form of a print advertisement in the British “Argos” catalog. But before we look at the new leak, here is an overview of what the rumor mill has to say:

  • The drone has been in production since February and was originally scheduled to be unveiled in New York on July 18. Due to insufficient production capacity, the release of the Mavic 2 Pro was postponed.
  • There will most likely be a Fly More combo again. The price of the drone should be around € 1299.
  • The remote control has seen some changes. OcuSync is on board!
  • A 360 ° anti-collision system scans the environment and prevents unwanted crashes.
  • There will be a DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise that can be expanded with various modules (LED signal generator, loudspeaker).
  • The camera of the drone is interchangeable.

But now to the latest leak...

Who or what is “Argos”?

Argos is one of the best-known British catalog shops, comparable to the local OTTO catalog. The catalog appears quarterly, which makes the first leak that the Mavic 2 Pro has been in production since February and a release is close at hand, all the more likely. The catalog was probably already printed when DJI had to cancel the July event.

DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom Leak

1 inch Hasselblad camera

The DJI Mavic 2 Pro is said to be equipped with a 1 inch Hasselblad camera. The extent to which the Swedish manufacturer of medium format cameras is responsible for the entire camera or just individual components is not clear from the Argos leak. The rectangular camera glass is striking. Circular PL filters are guaranteed to no longer fit! A lossless, optical zoom is not to be expected because of the sensor size.

Instead, another model appears with the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom. This will be equipped with a significantly smaller sensor, which, among other things, enables a 2x optical zoom. The focal length is 24 - 48 mm. A feature that is only available to zoom is the dolly zoom effect, also called traveling zoom or vertigo effect. By adjusting the focal length in the opposite direction to the flight movement, the focused object remains in the image at the same size, while the background becomes increasingly distant or closer.

Design and Others

DJI has only made a few design changes. The Mavic 2 Pro is said to retain the compact form factor of the Mavic series. Noticeable are the engines that appear larger, at least after the previous leaks. It is quite possible that the drone is more powerful. After all, the maximum flight speed is 20 m / s, with which the drone would beat its predecessor by 2 m / s. The image transmission should be stable with high resolution 1080p up to 8 km. The flight time is given as 31 minutes. In comparison, the flight time of the Mavic Pro is a maximum of 27 minutes.

Here you can buy the DJI Mavic 2 Pro.

The anti-collision protection should be omnidirectional, i.e. spherical in all directions (360 degrees). The APAS (Advanced Pilot Assistance System) recognizes obstacles and supports the pilot by automatically avoiding them. With Active Track, the drone is put into tracker mode. It is not yet clear which innovations Active Track 2.0 will deliver.

Here again all the previously known specifications in fast-forward:

  • DJI Mavic Pro 2 with 1 inch Hasselblad camera
  • DJI Mavic 2 Zoom with 2x optical zoom, 24 - 48 mm focal length and dolly effect (Mavic 2 Zoom)
  • High-resolution 1080p video stream to 8 km range (OcuSync)
  • Flight time from 31 minutes
  • Airspeed up to 20 m / s
  • 360 degree anti-collision protection and APAS
  • Active Track 2.0

Price and availability

This leak also does not provide any information about when the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom will appear. Neither is there any new information about the price. The catalog leak only refers to the online product page, which Argos has of course not put online. As soon as we receive new information about the drones, prices and availability, this post will be updated!

I'm really curious what the cost will be. I expect that 1299 € guaranteed will not be enough. Get at least 1500 €. In my opinion, only the Hasselblad camera would be a selling point. And that only if the 4K60 can.

Expect synonymous with a significantly higher price than the old Mavic. 4K on 60 is unlikely in my opinion. I'm curious what to expect in the fall.
