Chuwi LapBook Air

Chuwi not only produces inexpensive and impressive tablets, but also has powerful Windows 10 notebooks in its range with the “Chuwi LapBook” series. In the following article we will look at the Chuwi LapBook Air, the manufacturer's premium model released at the end of 2017. These are previously released models  Chuwi LapBook 12.3  (Mid 2017) and the Chuwi LapBook 15.6 (end of 2016)

The Chuwi LapBook Air is a notebook released at the end of 2017 with a 14.1 inch display diagonal and an Intel Celeron N3450 processor. Strictly speaking, the notebook is a premium version of the previously released 14.1 inch Chuwi laptop.

Design, keyboard and touchpad

Visually, the notebook is reminiscent of a typical MacBook clone from China. With dimensions of only 32.92 x 22.05 x 2.05 cm, the LapBook Air is even more compact than its predecessor models. The housing is made entirely of aluminum and shines in a classic gray. The weight of the notebook is comfortably light 1.35 kg. The keyboard and touchpad adapt to the housing design. There is a 11 x 6.4 cm multi-touchpad underneath the illuminated chiclet keyboard. Interested buyers should note that the keyboard is only available in the QWERTY layout!

Display

The notebook is equipped with a 14.1 inch Full HD "Full Lamination" IPS panel. A “full lamination” panel is characterized by the fact that the display is not constructed in multiple layers, but rather the individual display layers merge into an overall product during production. The advantages are a panel that can be manufactured more compactly, better light transmission and, as a result, stronger colors. The luminance of the display is 360 cd/m². The highly reflective display glass and frequent backlight bleeding are often criticized.

Processor and memory

The Chuwi LapBook Air was one of the first China notebooks with an Intel Celeron N3450 and 8GB dual-channel memory. The processor, released in 2016, is based on Intel's Apollo Lake processor architecture and comes with 4 processor cores (quad-core). The processor has a basic clock rate of 1.1 GHz and reaches a maximum clock rate of 2.2 GHz in burst mode. The processor graphics belonging to the system-on-chip is an Intel HD Graphics 500, with which older games such as CS: GO or Dota 2 can be played smoothly. The huge 8GB RAM clocks at 1333 MHz and achieves 12-12-12 RAM timings.

A 128GB Samsung eMMC 5.1 memory is used as data storage. The write speed is 125 MB / s, the read speed around 280 MB / s. If the memory is too small for you, you can expand it with an additional M.2 SSD (SATA-III 2242). The notebook is equipped with a small flap on the underside for uncomplicated memory access.

Battery and others

The capacity of the LapBook Air battery turns out to be extremely low at only 5.000 mAh (7.6V 33.7 Wh), at least at first glance. One should keep in mind, however, that the notebook is extremely compact. The average battery life is between 7 and 8 hours. A complete charging process takes 4 hours.

Further equipment features are a dual-AC WiFi module (802.11a / ac / b / g / n) with high data throughput, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 2 megapixel front camera, with which no miracles are to be expected, but which is sufficient for spontaneous video transmission . Of course, the notebook is also equipped with a stereo loudspeaker and two microphones (left and right of the front camera).
