Xiaomi Mi WiFi Router 4

The Xiaomi Mi Router 4 is already the 11th WiFi router from Xiaomi. The product line impresses above all with its lavish hardware and functional equipment at a low price. Especially the last tested  Xiaomi Mi router 3G  convinced by its versatile modification possibilities. This router still found and finds great acceptance within the OpenWRT developer community. Also the Xiaomi router 4 will most likely be modifiable, as it is also based on an OpenWRT supported MediaTek MT7621A chipset.

Design and connections

Compared to the last model series, the Xiaomi Router 4 has been slightly adjusted visually. The design of the simple white router measuring 200 × 134,86 × 178,98 mm has become a little rounder. There are also 4 movable omnidirectional antennas. The status LED is located on the front of the housing. The rear connection options include one WAN and two LAN ports with Gigabit connection as well as a DC power input. The “MiNet” button has been newly added. The USB port, which could have been used to integrate external data storage devices into the network, has been omitted. A pity!

hardware Features

As well as the Xiaomi router 3G the router 4 is based on a MediaTek chipset. The MT7621A MIPS has two processor cores that clock at up to 880 MHz. The memory configuration amounts to a 128 MB SLC Nand Flash and a 128 MB DDR3-1200 main memory. This is also the main difference to the 3G model. With 256GB MB DDR3-1200, this offers twice the amount of RAM, which can definitely affect the performance of the router.

WiFi and MiNet

The router supports the WiFi protocols IEEE 802.11a / b / g / n / ac and IEEE 802.3 / 3u / 3ab with the WPA-PSK / WPA2-PSK security protocol. The 4 omnidirectional antennas are used for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz connection. The transmission speed is a maximum of 2.4 Mbps in the 300 GHz network and 5 Mbps in the 867 GHz network.

The so-called “MiNet” was introduced with the Xiaomi Router 4. This is a special WiFi connection protocol that integrates the manufacturer's smart home devices into the network at the push of a button. According to Xiaomi, the router can support up to 128 devices connected at the same time. The router's user interface is the so-called MiWiFi OS, which in turn is based on OpenWRT. The router can be controlled via a web interface or app (Android and iOS). Plugins, such as an AdBlocker or the option to create a guest network, are available.

First impression, price and availability

 Strictly speaking, the Xiaomi Router 4 is just another gap filler between the Xiaomi Router 3 and Router 3G. The elimination of the USB interface and the reduction in RAM put the Router 4 (~27€) in the shadow of the Router 3G (~30€). It remains to be seen whether the possibilities of “MiNet” make up for these points. At least in this country, “MiNet” is likely to become just another unused feature that is primarily aimed at Chinese users.
