YI Lite - Small. Powerful. Lite.

Already since the MWC 2017 is known that YI Technology one Successor to the hugely popular YI 2K Action Cam in planning. The hardware was still very little known at this time, but it was known that the camera will use a housing identical to the YI 4K and will also be equipped with a display on the back. Meanwhile, the YI Lite for a few weeks in the trade.

Scope of delivery, design and workmanship

The What's in the box includes the Action Cam with waterproof case, a micro-USB cable, a rechargeable battery and a multilingual user guide with hint cards. The workmanship of the Action Cam, as well as the accessories is not objectionable.

Yi Lite front view

The case of the YI Lite differs little from the current YI top models. The Dimensions are 65 x 42 x 30 mm at a Weight of 72g with inserted battery. Due to the same dimensions, the accessories of the last released YI Action Cam models are compatible with each other. Even the batteries can be exchanged between the devices, the battery of the YI Lite despite its size only has a capacity of 1200 mAh.

The housing front of the matt black plastic housing form a status LED including "YI Lite" lettering, as well as the 6 layer lens with a 150 ° wide angle and a F / 2.8 aperture, The top of the housing is also equipped with a status LED, which is embedded in the power button. Surrounded by the power button of two microphones and the adjacent speaker. On the back is the 2 inch large touch screen, The battery compartment with integrated memory card slot is located on the bottom of the housing. At the same time there is a ¼ inch tripod thread. The connection options only amount to a micro USB socket. An HDMI connection option is missing!

Scope of delivery of the Yi Lite

Display and touch screen

Probably the most important feature of the YI Lite is the back display, whose absence of the YI 2K was counted as a big disadvantage. The LCD Display For me, only 2 inch is a bit more compact than the display of the current YI top models. Also the Resolution is up 320 240 x pixels reduced, thereby achieving a dot density of 200 PPI.

In practice, the display convinces by a pleasant sharpness, One realistic color reproduction and good viewing angle stability. display brightness is enough to read the display even under moderate sunshine. In strong sunshine, however, the display is only slightly readable, which is mainly due to the highly reflective surface.

The operation is similar to a smartphone over the Touchscreen the YI Lite. The accuracy of the touch screen is not objectionable. Entries are precisely recognized. If you have inserted the YI Lite in the waterproof case, the operation via the touch screen of course no longer works. Instead, the so-called "In Housing Fashion" enabled, allowing the action cam to be completely operated via the top-side button.

On the hardware side, the YI Lite is with one Hisilicon Hi3556V100 image processor and a 16 megapixel Sony IMX206 image sensor fitted. The Hisilicon chip consists of a 800 MHz Cortex-A7 and a 1.25 GHz Cortex-A17 core. In combination with the Sony IMX206 image sensor, the YI Lite is able to capture video in 4K with 15 pictures-per-second and in 1080p even with 60 images-per-second take. A electronic image stabilization is both on 2.7K, as well as the underlying resolutions to choose from. Bluetooth and WiFi are handled by a Broadcom 43455 chip. This supports Bluetooth in the version 4.1 and is able to build a 2.4G and 5G WLAN, whose data throughput is at maximum 50 MB / s.

Commissioning and user interface

YI Technology recommends having the Action Cam with at least one Class 10 Micro-SD Memory Card to use. The maximum memory size is specified by the manufacturer with 16GB to 64GB. In the test, however, an 128GB SD memory card was easily detected. Commissioning itself is straightforward. Insert the battery and memory card into the camera, switch on and start filming. Firmware updates can be downloaded directly from the manufacturer's website or you can automatically update via the YI Action App.

Yi Lite bottom

The User Interface Hardly different from the other YI Action Cam models. The splash screen is surrounded by shooting mode information, battery level, Wi-Fi status, and recording time. The lower bar also provides quick access to the gallery, which allows you to view stored recordings. As soon as the action cam is not used for a long time, the display darkens automatically and one of them darkens lock screen becomes active. Of course, such and other functions can also be configured directly via the settings menu.

"YI Action" app

To remotely control the YI Lite you either need the YI Bluetooth Remote or you use a mobile device with the so-called "YI Action" app, The app is for both Android, as well as for iOS mobile devices available and can be downloaded in the respective stores. The connection between the app and mobile device via WiFi, which is why the Action Cam for this purpose builds its own Wi-Fi.

When mobile device and YI Lite are connected, all camera settings can be made directly from the app. In addition, a Live image transfer, you can choose the recording mode and oh start a recording from a distance. Saved recordings can be transferred from the Action Cam to the mobile device, shared on social networks, or shared within the YI community.

In the test, there were no complaints regarding the transfer. The connection was stable up to several meters and only slightly delayed. The same applies to the access to the memory card. Recordings are quickly transferred to the mobile device.

recording quality

Video quality of the YI Lite

The YI Lite uses the same Sony image sensor that was already used on the older YI 2K. However, there are differences regarding the image processor that can process videos in 4K. However, the refresh rate is comparatively low 20 pictures-per-second. The video format is MP4, encoded in H.264.

YI Lite Review / Test | 1080p60 Sample - EIS - Audio Test [German]

The video recordings taken with the YI Lite convince in good light conditions by a pleasant level of detail with no overly saturated color reproduction. With increasingly poor lighting conditions, the image graining increases and also the sharpness and detail level is lost. High-resolution 4K video recordings are not fluent due to the low frame rate. Much more interesting, however, is that in 1080p liquid 60 images per second can be achieved. The maximal video bit rate is 32000 kbit / s. The Bitrate of the stereo soundtrack is at 45 kbit / s with a sampling rate of 48 kHz. Without the use of the watertight housing, the sound recording quality is acceptable, but sometimes somewhat tinny. With a waterproof housing, the recording volume is greatly reduced.

YI Lite Review / Test | 4K @ 20 Sample Footage

A well functioning feature, which significantly enhances the video recordings up to 1440p, is the electronic image stabilization (EIS), This uneven camera movements are digitally balanced on all 3 axes. A disadvantage is the low video quality loss and the slightly indented field of view. For this you get a largely wobble-free recording. Even running movements are stabilized to a certain extent.

Photo quality of the YI Lite

Photos can with 16 and 10 megapixels be included. The YI Lite is very well suited for one or the other snapshot. Photographs a natural color representation, a high degree of detail and a good contrast ratio. The function "Adjust Lens Distortion" ensures that the "fish-eye effect" is removed on the software side for both photo and video recordings. This also makes the Action Cam easy to use as a compact camera. The recording format is JPG. RAW or DNG is not available!

The included rechargeable battery of the YI Lite has one Capacity of 1200 mAh, In comparison, the battery of the YI top models has a capacity of 1400 mAh. There is no size difference between the batteries, which is why the more powerful YI batteries can be used with the YI Lite. The battery life varies depending on the resolution, how long the display remains active and whether the WLAN is active. The values given by YI Technology are largely traceable. With a resolution of 4K and disabled WiFi, the runtime was about 110 minutes. A value around the 100 minutes was understandable also with lower resolutions and at the same time higher image repetition rate. The loading time is 1 ½ hours.

Battery life

The YI Lite is a worthy successor to the YI 2K. The action cam convinces by a decent video quality, an easy operability via the touch screen as well as a long lasting battery life. However, the 4K video recording feature is not a purchase argument. Due to the low frame rate, 4K videos are not recorded smoothly, which is why the YI Lite is mainly for 1080p @ 60 or 1440p @ 30 interested parties.
