Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
Better zoom, better low-light capabilities
The Galaxy S24 Ultra brings with it all the expected annual improvements from a flagship phone. There are significant improvements to the camera. Samsung quickly replaced the 10 MP telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom with a larger 50 MP telephoto lens with 5x optical magnification.
Supported by the Adaptive Pixel Sensor, the quad-telephoto system is able to optically enlarge up to 10x and digitally zoom 100x.
For the main camera, the Galaxy S24 Ultra still uses a 200 MP sensor, but with a pixel size of 1.4 µm as well as improved OIS and EIS, it has better low-light capabilities than its predecessor.
Packed with artificial intelligence
Nothing works anymore without artificial intelligence. Similar to the Google Pixel 8 Pro The Galaxy S24 Ultra is packed with AI gadgets. Generative Edit to fill parts of the image background with AI and a new Instant Slow-Mo feature for smoother slow-motion videos are just a few new AI camera features.
Additional AI features include Live Translate for real-time translations during phone calls and a new interpreter mode. The Samsung keyboard also benefits from AI, with real-time translations in 13 languages.
Brighter display and faster Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy
Samsung relies on a brighter, 6,8-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with 2.600 nits and flat edges. The new Gorilla Glass Armor is said to reduce reflections by up to 75%.
Inside is the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chip from Qualcomm, supported by a 1,9x larger vapor chamber for improved heat dissipation.
Strong titanium frame and sustainable materials
Samsung reaches new heights in terms of processing quality. Titanium seems to be the new super material for smartphone manufacturers and, like Apple with the iPhone 15 Pro, Samsung is now also using a titanium frame in the Galaxy S24 Ultra, with only the edges made of titanium. The chassis, power and volume buttons are still made of aluminum.
Samsung also emphasizes the use of 40% recycled steel and 100% recycled rare earths in the speakers, as well as at least 50% recycled cobalt in the battery.
Samsung Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24
For those for whom the Ultra model is too large, Samsung offers the regular Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. Both models have larger displays than their predecessors - 6,2 inches and 6,7 inches - with almost unchanged dimensions thanks to reduced bezels. The panels' peak brightness is also 2.600 nits, and they can dynamically adjust their refresh rate from 1-120 Hz to optimize performance and battery life.
While there are no major camera upgrades on these models, they do benefit from the same AI features and the ability to capture HDR photos. In the USA, both the S24+ and S24 rely on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The Exynos 2400 is installed in Europe and other markets.
Samsung's new update policy is commendable. All models in the Galaxy S24 series will receive Android updates and security patches for seven years.
