Samsung Galaxy S8: The wait is over!

Many smartphone enthusiasts can take a deep breath. Samsung has officially launched the long-awaited Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. We have summarized the features of the smartphone and further information on price and availability in this article!

Samsung Galaxy S8

Frameless “Infinity Display”

Already after the first leaks about the Samsung Galaxy S8 it was foreseeable that the new Galaxy smartphone would have an extremely interesting design concept. Above all, the AMOLED type display is clearly the focus of this device. Available with a 5.8 inch and a 6.2 inch display diagonal with an unusual 2960 × 1440 pixel resolution, the smartphone achieves a dot density of 570 or 529 DPI. Despite the relatively large display diagonal, both models retain a compact size of 149 mm x 68 mm x 8 mm or 160 mm x 73 mm 8 mm. What had to disappear, however, was the physical home button with fingerprint scanner, which is no longer located below the display. The fingerprint scanner has instead been moved to the back of the case next to the lens of the main camera. If you want to unlock your smartphone while lying down, you have to use the iris scanner as the unlocking method. The highlight of the display is the edge design, which goes a step further compared to its predecessor - the Smasung Galaxy S7 Edge - and appears completely borderless.

"Two" processors

It is clear that there are no two system-on-chips in the Galaxy S8 either! Samsung has decided to release the device with different processor configurations. If the Galaxy S8 will be available in Europe with an Exynos 8895 processor, Samsung has decided to sell the smartphone with Qualcomm's high-end "Snapdragon 835" processor in other regions. In everyday life, a difference in performance will hardly be noticeable. In fact, the Exynos 8895 is currently ahead in current benchmark tests. The Exynos 8895 offers a total of 8 processor cores, of which 4 cores clock at 2.3 GHz and 4 cores clock at 1.7 GHz. The processor graphics of the SoC is a Mali G71 GPU, which can also handle particularly demanding mobile games. The memory features a 4GB RAM and an internal 64GB UFS 2.1 memory, which can also be expanded with a memory card.

Nothing new at the cameras

Samsung does not use a dual camera system with the Galaxy S8 either. As with the predecessor, the main camera has a resolution of 12 megapixels. An f / 1.7 aperture is used, an optical image stabilization is available and a laser autofocus should of course not be missing. The front camera, which is still on the front, has a resolution of 8 megapixels and also relies on an f / 1.7 aperture and autofocus.

Bixby

What would a smartphone producer be without an in-house assistant. Samsung joins “Bixby” alongside Google’s Assistant and Apple’s Siri. The assistant can be activated using a button on the side. If you have questions about the weather or opening apps, for example, Bixby listens to your word and answers them or opens the requested app. What is supposed to make Bixby stand out is its ability to learn and perform tasks in context. In addition, all information can be displayed in tile form. It remains to be seen whether Bixby can prevail against the other smart assistants.

Other

On the software side, the Galaxy S8 will be equipped with Android 7.0. Other hardware features include USB Type-C data and charging connections, support for the Galileo satellite system, a 3.000 or 3.500 mAh battery with Qi charging function, Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band AC WiFi with MU-MIMO support.

Price and availability

The Samsung Galaxy S8 can now be pre-ordered and costs € 799 or € 899 for the Plus version. Delivery or availability can be expected from April 28, 2017. An interesting feature of the scope of delivery are high-quality AKG headphones, which are included with every Galaxy S8.
