Xiaomi AirDots TWS In-Ear

Xiaomi AirDots Youth Edition - Wireless In-Ear Headphones

The Xiaomi AirDots Youth Edition are the first True Wireless In-Ears of the Chinese electronics giant. For the equivalent of 25 € the earphones promise an ergonomic fit, the support of the current Bluetooth 5.0 standard and an Apple AirPods similar functionality. In the following post we take a first look at the wireless earphones.

Xiaomi Mi AirDots Youth Edition

Update April 2019

The Xiaomi AirDots Youth is now also available under the Xiaomi brand “Redmi”. The Redmi AirDots headphones only differ in color. Functionally, both models are identical. You can find out more information and where you can currently buy the AirDots cheaply at the end of the article.

At least since the Apple AirPods, so-called True Wireless (TWS) in-ear headphones have been all the rage. So far, however, no other manufacturer has been able to throw Apple's AirPods from the throne. The TWS products, which are now widely available, usually fail because of their comfort, sound and range of functions. Xiaomi's AirDots Youth Edition also look less comfortable at first glance, but they have some very interesting features.

Ergonomic capsule design and smart operation

Xiaomi is known for giving its product an elegant, but at the same time simple design. It is the same with the AirDots Youth Edition. The compact capsule housings, which according to Xiaomi are adapted to the anatomy of the ear, are kept in a simple matt white and at least visually do not have a lot of frills. The weight is comfortably light 4.2g. If you consider that all hardware is in the capsules, this is quite remarkable! Apple's AirPods are hardly lighter at just 4g.

Speaking of which without a lot of frills. That's not entirely true. Xiaomi uses a sophisticated control option. The in-ears can be controlled via the touch control panel on the outside of the earphones. Depending on the order of contact, the volume can be adjusted, playback paused and resumed, and calls can be accepted or rejected. A very interesting feature, from which only Chinese users have benefited so far, is the XiaoAI integration. Tapping the in-ears on both sides automatically starts the smart voice assistant, which accepts voice commands via the built-in microphone.

Bluetooth 5.0 and 7.2 mm drivers

With Bluetooth 5.0, the Xiaomi AirDots Youth Edition support the latest Bluetooth standard. Not even the current AirPods generation can do that! The advantages of Bluetooth 5.0 are a significant increase in transmission speed and range, and an improved compression method. A 7.2 mm dynamic driver is responsible for the sound. In terms of sound, the in-ears promise a well-coordinated sound signature with strong bass. The aptX audio codec is not supported. How the AirDots Youth Edition will actually sound in the end will be tested soon!

Charge case with battery

In the practical charging case, the in-ears can not only be transported safely, but also charged on the go. For this purpose, the charging case is equipped with a 300 mAh battery that charges the headphones up to 2x with one battery charge. The rechargeable batteries of the earphones last for 4 hours of stereo music playback, 5 hours of mono playback and 12 hours in standby, depending on use.

I do not know. This thick button in the ear has never really appealed to me with these wireless in-ears. Then only a dynamic driver instead of a balanced armature, no aptx and probably not waterproof either. Certainly not bad for the price, but I'd rather wait and see if something better comes from Xiaomi. These are supposed to be the “Youth Editon”. Most of the time, Xiaomi also brings out a correct version.

I think it's awesome. At the price you can not expect more. If they sound really good now they are bought!

Sure that they have no aptx support? On the other side, they have aptx and would even be watertight.

Hey Felix, I'm very sure of that. I often do research with my Chinese colleagues and they have already confirmed several times that the Airdots (Youth Edition) do not support aptX. However, it is likely that Xiaomi will also release a model with aptX support. For the so-called “Youth Edition” there is usually a “full-fledged” model.

Thanks, I ordered it anyway. The price makes you really nothing wrong.
