The cat is out of the bag! The OnePlus 6, which has leaked frequently in the past few weeks, was officially presented in London. The smartphone will be available from May 22nd in the colors Mirror Black, Midnight Black and Silk White, as well as in 3 different memory variants. In terms of price, the model with 6 + 64GB is 519 €, the model with 8 + 128GB is 569 € and the top model with 8 + 256GB is 629 €.

Elegant design with glass back

OnePlus has always avoided major design changes. With the OnePlus 6, however, the manufacturer is venturing into new territory and is no longer using a full metal housing, but rather a housing with a glass back. Anyone who thinks of high fragility is wrong. The glass used for the back and front is so-called “Gorilla Glass 5” from Corning, which is characterized by high scratch and break resistance. The OnePlus 6 should be able to withstand external influences just like the previous full metal models. By using waterproof materials, the smartphone is also protected from splashes of water. The emphasis, however, is on “SPLASH WATER”. The OnePlus 6 definitely has no place in the water!

The three different color variants ensure a visual finish. The newly introduced color “Mirror Black” gives the smartphone a glossy look that is visually and tactilely reminiscent of ceramic. The well-known “Midnight Black” gives the smartphone a predominantly subtle look thanks to its matt black surface. The color "Silk White" creates a gentle mother-of-pearl effect with a slightly shimmering surface.

Huge 6.28 inch display

Although the OnePlus 6 (155.7 x 75.4 x 7.75 mm) hardly differs in size from the OnePlus 5T (156.1 x 75 x 7.3 mm), the smartphone offers an enormous 6.28 inch display with 2280 x 1080 pixel resolution. The larger display diagonal is made possible by the (often hated) “notch”. The aspect ratio has also been adjusted accordingly, which is now 19:9. There are no changes regarding the display technology used. The display is still of the “Optic AMOLED” type, which achieves deep blacks and particularly rich colors. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Gadgets such as an adaptive brightness mode or a special reading and night mode are of course on board.

High-end Snapdragon 845

You definitely don't have to worry about performance problems with the OnePlus 6. The current high-end system-on-chip “Snapdragon 845” from Qualcomm is installed. A total of 8 Kryo 385 processor cores, which clock at up to 2.8 GHz, give the smartphone a lot of steam. Compared to last year's SoC, the Snapdragon 835, the new Snapdragon 845 works approximately 30% faster. Despite the additional performance, Qualcomm has optimized the energy efficiency by another 10%. The processor graphics of the SoC is the Adreno 630 GPU, which offers enough performance to play current mobile and AR games smoothly.

To ensure that hardware and software harmonize with each other as best as possible, OnePlus has once again optimized the so-called “OxygenOS”, which is based on Android 8.1. In order not to slow down the processor unnecessarily, invisible background processes are regulated, among other things. As a treat, the manufacturer will also bring the first Android P Developer version to the OnePlus 6 at the end of May.

In addition to a fast processor, a high-performance memory connection is also crucial. OnePlus relies on an LPDDR4X RAM and a UFS 2.1 2-lane data memory. As already mentioned, the size of the working and data memory differs depending on the model variant. Regardless of which model you choose, the lavish and fast memory configuration ensures smooth multitasking. A memory expansion using a microSD memory card is not provided. 

Camera with OIS, slow-motion and video editor

The OnePlus 6 is equipped with a dual main camera. Both sensors come from Sony, of which the main sensor, a Sony IMX 519, was only released in February 2018. The native resolution of the Sony IMX 519 is 16 megapixels with a pixel size of 1.22 µm. Other features include an f/1.7 aperture and optical and electronic image stabilization (OIS + EIS). Not only video recordings are stabilized, but also photo recordings, which enables better recordings at night. The so-called “bokeh effect” (image capture with depth effect) is made possible by the secondary 20 megapixel Sony IMX 376K sensor with 1.0 µm pixel size and f/1.7 aperture.

 The smartphone records videos in 4K at up to 60 frames per second. “Super Slow Motion” shows movement sequences at a slower speed of up to 480 frames per second (720p). Editing videos directly on your smartphone is easier and does not require an additional app. OnePlus has integrated its own video editor that includes various cutting effects and filters. The front camera is a 16 megapixel Sony IMX 371 sensor with fixed focus, f/2.0 aperture and electronic image stabilization. The “bokeh effect” should soon be possible with the front camera. OnePlus has already announced a corresponding software update.

Connectivity and others

Like the previous models, the OnePlus 6 is a smartphone with global cellular support (37 different bands). Dual SIM use is possible and both slots are LTE-capable. The latest 4x4 MIMO standard is supported so that you can travel quickly in WLAN. Bluetooth version 5 is available. Precise navigation is achieved using the GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo satellite systems. NFC is available. A fingerprint scanner was placed on the back below the camera. An RGB notification LED is present as well as a 3.5 mm jack audio output.

Last but not least, let's talk about the battery. This has a capacity of 3300 mAh. The battery can be charged quickly thanks to Dash Charge (5V 4A). The charging socket is of the USB-C type. Anyone who hoped for a Qi charging function by using the glass back will unfortunately be disappointed. OnePlus has decided against inductive charging. Pity!
