UMIDIGI S2 Pro
The UMIDIGI S2 Pro is, after the recently released S2 without the “Pro addition”, the second smartphone from the Chinese manufacturer that is based on the design of a Samsung Galaxy S8. The main focus is on the large, high-resolution 6-inch display with an aspect ratio of 18:9.
Display
The smartphone's display has a diagonal of 6 inches and has a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. UMIDIGI itself speaks of a screen-to-body ratio, i.e. a ratio of display to housing, of a full 90%. Regardless of whether they are large or small smartphone manufacturers, almost every manufacturer has whispered about this information. Based on the case dimensions, which are 158.1 x 74.6 x 8.8 mm for this smartphone, as well as the display diagonal and the display resolution, you get a value of only 78.77%. Even if UMIDIGI flunkert with this indication, the Smartphone offers a comparatively large display, whose housing dimensions are not however over a 5.5 Zoll Smartphone lie.
The panel comes from Sharp and is of the “TDDI In-Cell” type. Such in-cell panels are characterized primarily by the fact that the LCD and the touchscreen are connected to each other without intermediate layers, which at the same time allows the production of a lighter and more compact panel. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which is characterized by high scratch resistance and break resistance.
Processor and memory
Every year the UMIDIGI S2 Pro also relies on the tried and tested MediaTek Helio P25 processor, which can also be found in many other mid-range China smartphones. It is an octa-core processor whose Cortex-A53 cores clock with up to 2.6 GHz. The graphics processor of the system-on-chip is a so-called Mali-T880 MP2 GPU. The Helio P25 System-on-Chip has already proven itself in many other smartphones that we have tested. Although the system will not be able to keep up with other high-end smartphones in terms of performance, almost all of the smartphones with Helio P25 SoC that we tested convinced with adequate everyday performance with smooth multitasking and sufficient gaming suitability. The storage equipment of the S2 Pro is generous. A 6GB DDR4X memory and a 128GB eMMC5.1 flash memory are installed. A memory expansion using a microSD memory card is possible at the expense of the second nano-SIM slot.
Camera
The smartphone has a dual rear camera. When choosing a sensor, UMIDIGI opted for a 13 megapixel Sony IMX258 main sensor and an additional, unspecified, 5 megapixel sensor. This is most likely the same sensor combination that was already used in the smaller UMIDIGI S2. By the way, the first model of the S2 did not have a 5 megapixel sensor, despite the fact that it had a 2 megapixel sensor. The test will have to show to what extent this also applies to the S2.0 Pro. Further information about the camera would be an F16 aperture and PD autofocus. The front camera uses an unspecified XNUMX megapixel image sensor. In general, UMIDIGI only provides a limited amount of information about the front camera on this smartphone, which is why you can (possibly) be prepared for a “surprise”.
Design, battery and others
The dimensions of the case are, as already mentioned, 158.1 x 74.6 x 8.8 mm and weighs 186g. The UMIDIGI S2 Pro is therefore a large smartphone in a compact housing. The case itself is made in one piece according to the so-called “unibody” design and is made of metal. As a further highlight, in addition to the 18:9 display, UMIDIGI promises protection against water and dust. This protection is achieved through a special nano-coating. In the test it could be interesting to see to what extent the UMIDIGI S2 Pro is actually waterproof, or whether the manufacturer has once again gone too far. Other features include a smart unlocking function using facial recognition, a large 5.100 mAh battery that should ensure long-lasting battery life, and a fingerprint scanner. The usual mobile phone frequencies in this country are fully supported. As a dual-SIM smartphone, the S2 Pro can be operated with two nano-SIM cards. GPS / GLONASS, as well as the usual sensors (acceleration, proximity and brightness) are available. For wireless transmission, the smartphone supports dual-band WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n) and Bluetooth 4.0. Android 7.0 is preinstalled as the operating system.

UMIDIGI has a firm place in the Chinese smartphone sector and is already one of the better-known producers. Nevertheless, the manufacturer is often criticized for frequently providing incorrect information, especially regarding hardware specifications. The same could also apply to the UMIDIGI S2 Pro. The “nano coating” in particular, which is intended to provide protection against water and dust, leaves questions unanswered. Although there are actually such (spray) coatings that can protect the hardware from water, there is no such thing as complete and long-lasting water protection. Anyone who orders the UMIDIGI S2 Pro now should, as a precaution, not be one of the first to go swimming with it and rather wait for the first test reports on the device.
