Google Pixel Watch 2: Visually the same, technically revised – is the upgrade worth it?

Google's latest smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 2, remains externally faithful to its predecessor. But a lot has happened beneath the surface. We take a closer look at the innovations and tell you 10 things you should know about the Pixel Watch 2.

Design and hardware: Tried and tested meets fresh details

After a flood of rumors and speculation, Google has finally unveiled the Pixel Watch 2. From the outside, you could almost think that Google had adopted the design of its predecessor one-to-one. But as the saying goes? The devil is in the details.

The smartwatch retains its case size of 41 mm and also uses a 1,2-inch AMOLED panel for the display. But Google didn't just deliver a copy of the previous model, it also tweaked the casing a bit. The crown of the watch has been redesigned to enable more pleasant navigation through the user interface. In addition, the smartwatch is now officially protected against dust and water according to IP68. The predecessor is also waterproof, but does not have an IP rating.

And anyone looking for an individual look will be happy about the new band colors. The “Polished Silver” model now comes with either a white porcelain strap or a blue Bay strap.

Performance boost thanks to Qualcomm: More than just an update

The Pixel Watch 2's major upgrades can be found under the hood. The Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 chipset replaces the older Exynos chipset, which was installed in the first generation. This change not only promises better performance, but should also ensure longer battery life.

Google speaks of 24 hours of use with the always-on display activated. So if you don't feel like charging your smartwatch every day, you could get your money's worth here.

Innovations in the health sector: stress levels and sleep quality at a glance

Google has given the Pixel Watch 2 a few additional sensors that are intended to take fitness tracking to the next level. An electrical sensor to measure skin conductivity (cEDA) for monitoring stress levels and a skin temperature sensor to improve sleep tracking.

In addition, the smartwatch remains true to the tried and tested health functions of the first generation, including continuous heart rate monitoring, which is now even more precise, and sleep analysis.

Software: Wear OS 4 and more security

While the Pixel Watch 2 isn't the first smartwatch with Wear OS 4, it does bring some nice software features. For example, users no longer have to reset their watch if they want to pair it with a new phone. And for those who want additional security, there is a new security check that sends a status query after a pre-set period of time and informs emergency contacts if necessary.

Fitbit Premium: Try it free for six months

As a special bonus, Google ships the Pixel Watch 2 with a six-month trial version of Fitbit Premium. This offers in-depth analyzes and more individual training plans and could be an interesting addition for fitness enthusiasts.
