Huawei Mate 20 Series

With the Huawei Mate 20 and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has presented two new models in the innovative series. Based on the new Kirin 980 system-on-chip, which was manufactured for the first time using the 7nm process, as well as the powerful on-device AI, both smartphones offer a unique user experience. Innovations continue with the revolutionary dual NPU, a new Leica triple camera and Huawei SuperCharge technology, a fast charging function that charges with up to 40 watts.

Brilliant design and OLED display

The Huawei Mate 20 series comes in a sleek housing. Both devices are available in different colors. In the colors Emerald Green and Midnight Blue, the back is structured with a “Hyper Optical Pattern”, which makes the smartphone more comfortable to hold. The rear camera is arranged in a two-by-two matrix and surrounded by a polished metal frame. The new 6.39 inch OLED display of the Mate 20 Pro (resolution: 3.120 x 1.440 pixels) and the 6.53 inch IPS display of the Mate 20 (resolution: 2.244 x 1.080 pixels) show colors with excellent contrast and high brightness.

Fast on the road with the Kirin 980 SoC

The Kirin 980 is the new system-on-chip of the Huawei Mate 20 Series. The SoC, manufactured using the 7nm process, has 10x more transistors than a conventional 1.6nm SoC. The unique three-level architecture divides the SoC into two ultra-fast and two highly efficient Cortex-A76 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores. The Cortex-A76 cores are up to 75 percent more powerful and 58 percent more efficient than their predecessors. The Mali-G46 GPU ensures a graphical performance increase of up to 76 percent with higher efficiency at the same time. The SoC's new dual NPU is responsible for the smartphone's AI tasks. Other hardware features include support for Cat21 LTE, Dual-AC WiFi (802.11ac) and Bluetooth 5.0.

Both the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Huawei Mate 20 are equipped with a 128 GB (256GB) data memory. With the newly introduced nano memory card format the size of a nano SIM card, the data memory can be expanded by up to 256 GB. The main memory comes with a size of 6GB / 8GB (Pro) or 4GB / 6GB.

Leica Triple Camera for even better shots

Huawei has given the Mate 20 series a new Leica triple camera with an ultra-wide-angle lens. In the case of the Mate 20 Pro, the triple camera consists of a 40 megapixel RGB sensor with a wide angle lens (aperture f / 1.8), a 20 megapixel sensor with an ultra wide angle lens (aperture f / 2.2) and an 8 megapixel sensor Telephoto lens (aperture f / 2.4) together. The front camera has a resolution of 24 megapixels. The sensor technology of the Mate 20 amounts to a 12 + 16 + 8 megapixel triple camera. Ultra-wide-angle shots and macro shots with razor-sharp details at a distance of just 2,5 cm are no problem.

The AI ​​camera functions offer new possibilities. The AI ​​cinema mode improves the hue, saturation and brightness of the video clips. Different modes (vintage, fresh, tension and blurred background) can be superimposed on the recording with ease. Through selective desaturation, the foreground is highlighted in color and the background is faded. The AI ​​spotlight mode analyzes videos and shortens them to a 10-second highlight clip.

Videos can be recorded natively in a 21:9 aspect ratio, allowing for a much wider and more comprehensive perspective. Both models are “YouTube Signature Devices” certified and support playback of HDR recordings.

EMUI 9.0 and more security

The new Android operating system EMUI 9.0, which is based on Android Pie, runs on the smartphones. The new user interface is clearly structured and offers many useful functions. HiVision supplements the camera app, identifies sights or other objects and provides the user with appropriate information. HiTouch recognizes products and automatically displays the right online shopping offers.

 The device's usage statistics can be tracked with the digital balance function. In this way, the user can see exactly how long he has been using the smartphone or an app. The Easy Projection 2.0 function enables wireless connection to a monitor. This means that the smartphone can easily be used as a PC replacement with an optimized operating interface.

For those who attach great importance to security, the Mate 20 Pro offers a fingerprint sensor integrated in the display and a 3D face unlock. The latter recognizes a user within 600 ms, with an error rate of less than one in a million. The Mate 20, on the other hand, is equipped with a classic fingerprint scanner on the back and a conventional face unlock. Both devices can also be protected with common unlocking methods, such as the pattern or the PIN.

 Super fast charging 

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro offers a 4.200 mAh battery. The Huawei SuperCharge technology charges the smartphone with up to 40 watts in just 30 minutes by 70 percent. In addition to wired charging, Qi charging with up to 15 watts is also possible. The battery can be charged by up to 30 percent in just 30 minutes.

Thanks to reverse charge, the smartphone can be converted into a power bank to supply other devices with power wirelessly. The battery of the Huawei Mate 20 is a bit more compact with 4.000 mAh. The SuperCharge function of the Mate 20 has an output of 22,5 watts.

Price and availability

The Mate 20 Pro costs € 849. The Mate 20 is available for € 799. From October 16 to 25, pre-orderers will receive an Amazon Echo Plus worth € 20 free of charge when purchasing the Mate 149,99. Those who pre-order the Mate 20 Pro will receive an Amazon Echo Show worth € 229,99 for free. The exception is the Mate 20 Pro in the color emerald green.
