Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2: New platform for mixed and virtual reality

Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform. As a further development of the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, the new platform offers, among other things, more performance and a higher resolution in VR and XR application areas.

Higher resolution, more performance and AI technologies

With the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform, Qualcomm has further increased the maximum possible resolution. Instead of the previous 3K of the previous platform, you are now able to produce a resolution of 4.3K per eye. This promises visibly more clarity in XR and VR applications and, in combination with up to 90 frames per second, a noticeably smooth display.

However, the technical improvements go beyond higher resolution. Qualcomm has increased the  GPU performance by 15%  and the  CPU frequency by 20%  compared to the previous model. Translated, this means: sharper visuals, smoother movements and less jerking. The additional features such as dynamic foveated rendering, space warp and game super resolution further spice up the visual experience.

In addition, the platform integrates advanced AI technologies and supports the simultaneous use of 12 or more cameras. This enables expanded interaction possibilities, including recognition of hand movements, head movements, controller inputs, facial expressions as well as depth estimates and 3D reconstructions.

Partnerships with Samsung and Google

In this context, Qualcomm has also announced partnerships with companies such as Samsung and Google. These collaborations aim to advance the development of XR technologies and promote integration into existing and future Galaxy devices and the Android ecosystem.

Additionally, Qualcomm introduced a  new MR & VR reference design developed in collaboration with Goertek and incorporating eye tracking technology from Tobii. Resolutions from 3K to 4K per eye are supported, enabling unprecedented image clarity for applications such as room-sized screens, life-sized overlays and virtual desktops.
