Xiaomi Watch - advance information about the Mi Smartwatch

Updated by Timo Altmeyer on the 6. October 2024

On the 05. November, Xiaomi will introduce a smartwatch under its own brand. First teasers indicate support for GPS, NFC and WiFi, but also eSIM. In terms of design, Xiaomi is obviously oriented towards the success of the Apple Watch. It remains interesting to see whether the Xiaomi Smartwatch actually relies on Google's Wear OS or its own, proprietary operating system.

Xiaomi Mi Watch

Xiaomi has planned a big hardware event for November 05th. In addition to a new smartphone and a television, the release of a smartwatch is also on the agenda. This would make it the first smartwatch from Xiaomi to appear under its own brand. The Xiaomi Watch should not be confused with the Amazfit smartwatches! The manufacturer “Huami” responsible for Amazfit is only Xiaomi’s wearable partner. Wearables that are also popular in this country, such as this Xiaomi Mi Band 4, lets Xiaomi develop and produce directly from the close partner Huami.

Operating system

What remains particularly exciting is which operating system the Mi Watch will appear with. One option that would be particularly beneficial for Western users would be a release with Google's Wear OS. On the other hand, it is not known to what extent Xiaomi is planning to release it outside of China. The design, which is strongly reminiscent of the Apple Watch, is a cause for concern. Apple was able to force a European sales stop for the “Mi Pad 2017” in 3 because it was too similar to the iPad product line.

However, there are many indications that such a highly anticipated product is very close to a global release. After all, Xiaomi is aiming for increasing growth in Western countries and has already released some of its products globally.

Features

Not much is known about the functions at the moment. The teasers show that the smartwatch uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 system-on-chip, supports WiFi, GPS and NFC, and is eSIM compatible. In order to set yourself apart from the Amazfit products, the Xiaomi Watch will most likely be a full-fledged smartwatch that, in addition to sports functions, also offers telephony and SMS functions.

Xiaomi Watch Review

Mobile payment will be possible thanks to NFC. But here, too, it remains to be seen whether Xiaomi will opt for a global release. Many of the wearables released in China with NFC, most recently that Mi Band 4 NFC, do not support mobile payment options outside of China! The possibility of using eSIM outside China remains interesting, too.

Price and availability

If you believe the leaks, the smartwatch should only be slightly more expensive than an Amazfit GTS. A price between € 150 and € 200 should therefore be expected. However, by the time it is published on November 05th, we will know more. If you want to stay informed about the Xiaomi Watch, it is worth keeping an eye on this post or taking a look at ours Amazfit Facebook group to throw.
