Foreword: Xiaomi MIJIA Action Cam

Some will wonder now, why the "Xiaomi Mini Camera" (米 家小 相机) the first action cam of the manufacturer should be. After all, conquered 2015 already the first Xiaomi Yi Action Cam the market. However, this was a product of "Yi Technology" produced and distributed only in Asia by Xiaomi. Meanwhile, Yi Technology produces and distributes its products completely independently of Xiaomi. The Xiaomi Action Cam, which has now appeared under the name "MIJIA", is thus the first action cam on the Xiaomi itself as a developer and simultaneously distributed.

Scope of delivery, design and workmanship

Anyone who already owns other Xiaomi products knows that the manufacturer does not attach much importance to a comprehensive scope of delivery. Accessories are usually not included with Xiaomi products. Also the scope of delivery around the Xiaomi MIJIA Action Cam is comparatively narrow. Included are in addition to the action cam one more MicroUSB cable, the Accumulator and Manual. A waterproof case and brackets must be purchased separately.

Xiaomi MIJIA Mini Camera included

The MIJIA Action Cam is with Dimensions of 71.5 × 42.7 × 29.5 mm a bit wider than traditional action cams. A waterproof case, which is often included in cheap third-party accessory packages, will not fit. If you want to protect the Action Cam, you should order the original Xiaomi case as well! That too Weight: coincides 99g (including battery) comparatively high.

The completely made of plastic housing is square shaped and has rounded edges. Interesting is the case frame, which is provided with a slightly roughened, non-slip surface. The only control button is located above the frame. Next to it are a status LED, the microphone and the speaker. The front is the Lens with a 145 ° wide angle, In turn, another and multi-colored status LED was placed next to it. The only connection option is a MicroUSB socket on one of the sides of the housing, which is cleverly concealed under a sliding cap. There is no HDMI connection option with the Xiaomi MIJIA Action Cam.

The case back takes that 2.4 inch large touch display on. On the bottom of the case are the battery compartment including microSD memory card slot and a ¼ inch tripod thread, The processing quality of the MIJIA Action Cam corresponds to the typical Xiaomi quality and can certainly compete with the much more expensive market leaders.

Display and touch screen

The Service takes place on the back via a 2.4 inch large touch screen and physical control button on the top of the housing. Thus, the Xiaomi Action Cam uses a larger touch screen than the current market leaders GoPro HERO6 (2 inches) and Yi 4K + (2.19 inches). The resolution of the display is 960 x 480 pixels.

In practice, the touch display convinces. Due to the high display resolution, the display is particularly sharp. Colors are displayed accurately. A lateral view of the display leads to hardly any change in presentation, which speaks for a good viewing angle stability. Important for every Action Cam with display is the maximum display brightness and thus the readability in strong light. Again, the Xiaomi MIJIA Mini Camera performs surprisingly well. Overall, 3 brightness levels are available. At the highest brightness level, the display is still easy to read even in strong sunshine. Only a direct incidence of light leads to the fact that the display is hardly readable due to the reflecting surface. The operation over the Touchscreen is straightforward. Wiping movements and touch inputs are detected precisely.

Xiaomi sets in the MIJIA Action Cam on a very interesting and atypical combination Sony IMX317 image sensor and a Ambarella A12S75 image processor, The Sony IMX317 is a native in 8 megapixel resolution and 1 / 2.5 inch large image sensorwho is the one Exmor R DOL-HDR technology served. DOL-HDR stands for "Digital Overlap High Dynamic Range" and ensures that different exposure and subsequent processing result in an image with improved interaction between light and dark. Theoretically, this makes better night shots possible, while improving color reproduction. WiFi is supported with the protocols IEEE802.11 b / g / n. Bluetooth is available in version 4.1. A Bosch BMI160 IMUthat is made up of one 3-axis gyroscope and a 3 axis accelerometer allows electronic image stabilization (EIS).

Commissioning and user interface

The commissioning despite the Chinese manual is no problem. Insert memory card and battery, turn on and losfilmen. Which in turn could become an initial problem is the Chinese user interface. For example, our test copy was on an early firmware release that offered only Chinese as the selectable language. Only with the firmware version also English was added as system language. Who ordered the Action Cam but at the present time, should receive a model with current firmware.

For those who are greeted by a Chinese firmware, the following steps are recommended for flashing the current firmware. The firmware can be under this Link be downloaded (registration with Mi account necessary!).

  1. Unzip firmware.bin.
  2. Copy Firmware.bin to the root directory of the SD memory card.
  3. Turn on the camera and check if the battery of the camera is fully charged.
  4. Confirm the update with the right selection on the display.
  5. Wait for the update to be installed (1-2 minutes - LEDs are flashing).
  6. Scroll down from the top of the touch screen and select the settings icon.
  7. The 3. Select menu item from below and select English as language.

Xiaomi recommends having the Action Cam with at least one Class 10 Micro-SD Memory Card to use. For high resolution 4K video recordings are best suited Memory cards with UHS-3 interface, The maximum memory size is specified by the manufacturer with 64GB. In the test, however, an 128GB SD memory card was easily detected.

The User Interface is clearly structured. Of the Home screen is not too cluttered and delivers at the top and bottom About the recording mode, the remaining one recording time and the battery Level. recording settings can be reached via the settings icon at the bottom. With a swipe to the left you switch to the overview of the individual recording modes. A swipe to the right leads to Gallery, If you wipe from top to bottom, opens Drop-down menu, Here you can get into the general settings, you can turn the WiFi on and off, activate the screen lock or turn off the camera. Here is an overview of all recording modes and settings options.

"Mi Home" app

remote control can the Xiaomi MIJIA Action Cam both by App, but also via Bluetooth with a corresponding one Bluetooth Remote, The app control is done via the "Mi Home" appwhich also serves to manage other Xiaomi products. The Mi Home app is available for both Android and iOS mobile devices in their respective stores.

The app is also completely in English. If this is not the case when starting the app for the first time, the app language in the profile settings has to be changed from "Default" to "English". The connection between Action Cam and mobile device is via WiFi. The camera builds for this purpose its own WLAN, to which one connects with the mobile device. All Shooting settings and general camera settings can be made directly from the app. At the same time, the Mi Home app offers the possibility of Live picture output and you can transfer all the pictures stored on the SD memory card to the connected mobile device.

The transmission between the mobile device and Action Cam proved to be extremely stable and only slightly delayed in the test. However, a slight delay is normal and also occurs with cameras from other manufacturers. Unfortunately, the MIJIA Action Cam only builds up a 2.4 GHz network.

recording quality

Video quality of the Xiaomi MIJIA Action Cam

Videos takes the Xiaomi Mini Camera at maximum 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) at 30 images-per-second on. With a resolution of 1080p reaches the action cam up to 100 pictures-per-secondWherein 720p even up to 200 pictures-per-second, The recording format is MP4, encoded with H.264.

Xiaomi MIJIA Action Cam Review / Test | 4K @ 30 Sample Footage

In the price range up to 100 € the 4K recording quality of the Xiaomi MIJIA Action Cam is hard to beat. Recordings are crisp and sharp and feature a high level of detail over the entire image area. If you reduce the resolution, the level of detail decreases slightly. The color reproduction is full. With difficult lighting conditions, the camera gets along well, so that even shooting in backlight does not cause any problems. To what extent the advertised by the manufacturer 3D noise reduction is hard to understand. Picture noise is not noticeable, at least in good light conditions, and is hardly noticeable even in poorer light conditions. The maximum video bit rate is 61000 kBit / s. The bit rate of the stereo audio track is 127 kbit / s with a sample rate of 48 kHz. Unfortunately, the sound recording quality is not quite as good. Although spoken words are recorded in a comprehensible manner over a longer distance, there is a "cracking" at regular intervals that disturbs the sound recording.

One feature that should not be missing from any good Action Cam is the image stabilization, The Xiaomi MIJIA Action Cam allows to electronically stabilize recordings up to 1080p @ 60. For this the camera uses one Bosch BMI160 IMUwhich consists of an 3-axis gyroscope and an 3-axis accelerometer. Thus, the camera would indeed be equipped with the same Bosch IMU, which also in the much more expensive Yi 4K + However, the stabilization performance can not keep up with the current Yi top model. Major shocks result in small micro-snares, which make the recording largely unusable. Gentle camera pans are in turn adequately stabilized. Running movements should be avoided. To what extent Xiaomi will improve the EIS with future firmware updates is currently not foreseeable.

Photo quality of the Xiaomi MIJIA Action Cam

The photo resolution is by the 8 Megapixel Image sensor limited. Selectable are the Aspect Ratio 16: 9 (3840 x 2160) and 4: 3 (2880 x 2160), The recording format is JPG. In addition, it is possible to take pictures as JPG + DNG save. Shot photos convince as already the video recordings by rich colors, a very low image noise and a high level of detail over the entire image area. The Lens distortion correction can only be activated in the selected 4: 3 format.

A Capacity of 1450 mAh, the Xiaomi MIJIA Camera owns one of the largest rechargeable batteries the Action Cam market currently offers. Due to the atypical battery format, it is also difficult spare batteries to acquire. Although almost every import shop has the camera with a waterproof case and selfie stick listed, but separate batteries are only available via detours! The Battery life lies with one 4K resolution at about 105 Minutes, With reduced resolution are on 1080p after all 135 Minutes to achieve. A full battery charge takes 100 minutes.

Battery life

The Xiaomi Mini Camera is one of the best action cams in the price range around 100 €. The camera convinces by a very good video and photo-recording quality, an excellent battery life and a good touch display with decent display brightness. There are some drawbacks with regard to the error-prone sound recording quality, as well as the quickly overwhelmed image stabilization. To criticize is also the scope of delivery, which fails without waterproof housing and without mounts rather lean.

I would like to buy an Actioncam in this price range and I am unsure if it should be the Mijia or the Yi lite. Unfortunately, Mijia currently has very few accessories on the market. Do you know if anything is planned in the near future? Which of the two cameras would you recommend to me?

I'm not sure Xiaomi Mijia 4K mini and ROLLEI 610 Action Cam 4k unsure what would you recommend?
Price-performance? Service in the event of a defect?

Hello Timo ????
I chose Mijia 4k. Degree just received the delivery ???? Gimbal should follow the days and accessories also ????

Hello, can I hang on the Cam an external Micro on it? I need a very good audio and good video quality. An external micro would be perfect for my application scenarios ????

You write cool reviews 🙂 I am currently considering ordering the Xiaomi MIJIA. I would primarily use it for kayaking on the water (in a waterproof case, of course).
Since I would mount the camera on the kayak that I could not get it, I would also need a remote controller, which is yes for the camera. The question now is whether the remote controller is waterproof, or if there is at least one waterproof alternative?

Best regards

OK - thanks for the quick reply. That's not a bad idea 🙂
Do you feel that this is the right camera or would you recommend another?

Hello, a very essential component was unfortunately insufficient to totally misleading and wrongly viewed: Mi Home app integration does not exist (really) This is a joke to the power of 10. The cheap € 20 Xiaomi cams are much, much better integrated than those of The cam you are looking at is not integrated, but “outsourced” because the XIAOMI CAM requires the phone to log off from its own WLAN and log on to the XIAOMI Action CAM network. There is not a word about it in the test, not a word about the fact that 1. you have to leave your WiFi and that of the Mi Home app for the duration of use 2. you have to log in to the WiFi of the camera with a code 3. you only have to log in with can currently register with one device (the other cams can support smartphone synchronously). So you first have to log out hard on the smartphone before the tablet can be used. 4. the cam... Continue reading "

What about underwater shots (snorkeling), of course, only with Case? Do you have experience how fast the focus works and how good the image quality is underwater?

For the first time I read comprehensive information about the frame rates on your site (including 4K @ 30/25 | 2.5K@30/25) - THANK YOU! This is also important for everyone who later wants to cut from different sources. Most of the time, the descriptions only say: up to 4k / 30fps. But I'm looking for an action camera that records 25/50 or 50i. But here again nothing says 24fps, as with others - I don't need it. What is right now?
Does the camera record with exactly 25/50 fps? Can one determine in the editing program (eg EDIUS). Sometimes they are a little off, as is the case with some smartphones. Then there is ghosting and stuttering.
Is the sound recording now improved? Rumpler and Kracher in between, of course, do not go. This is an exclusion criterion.
I'm curious. Best regards, Jochen

Hello, very good report, thank you. is also a remote control (Bluetooth) available or is there only for YI?

Hi Timo,
Unfortunately, the Bluetooth remote control does not work for me, although a connection can be established with the mobile phone, only as proof that the battery is still usable :(.

Hi Timo,
Thanks for your quick reply. Since I really have no plan how to do that, you can describe that to me in detail (step by step) what I have to do there.

seems to work

So, downloading the new software worked, but unfortunately the remote still does not work. I have no idea what this could be ???

So, only now is the new software implemented. It works :)))).
World class. Thank you Tino ????

Unfortunately, the remote does not work for me. I installed the version 6.15.05i and the Cam does not want to pair with the FB. What can this be?

Actually, I'm looking for a dash cam. Often also action cams can be used for it. For example, the SJ4000. The essential is that the cam turns on automatically and starts recording when charging voltage is applied to the USB input. Can the Xiaomi mijia do that? Or it turns on at least one and one can then the cam, without manual handling s.der Cam, turn on the App or start recording? greeting

Unfortunately, the following is not correct:
- EIS stabilization only works with 1080/30, not as you indicated with 1080/60! That should be corrected.
- The lens distortion correction can also be activated with 16: 9, not as you indicated only with 4: 3 recordings.
- The following statement is incorrect about loop recording: “If the SD card is full, recordings will be deleted” - a period of 1-30 minutes must be entered.

Great thank you! I did not think that so many basic things will be changed in the course of the firmware versions.

Is the sound problem fixed?
