Design: Slim and robust
With the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi continues its approach of a comparatively compact flagship. With a 6,3-inch display, the device remains significantly more manageable than the Ultra model and once again positions itself as an alternative to large premium smartphones.
Externally, Xiaomi retains the slim aluminum frame and IP68 certification. However, significantly reduced display bezels of approximately 1,18 mm are new, making the Xiaomi 17 appear even more compact than the Xiaomi 15 (152,3 × 71,2 mm) despite similarly sized components. The so-called Xiaomi Guardian Structure again combines reinforced protective glass and structural frame reinforcement.
The device is available in four color options: Black, Venture Green, Alpine Pink and Ice Blue.
Camera: larger sensor and more flexible telephoto module
The main camera nominally remains at 50 MP, but for the first time uses the new Light Fusion 950 sensor in a 1/1,31-inch format. The Xiaomi 15 (here to test) the Light Fusion 900 was also used, also with 2,4 µm superpixel binning, but with lower light absorption and dynamic range.
According to Xiaomi, the new sensor achieves a dynamic range of up to 13,5 EV, which should be particularly advantageous for HDR scenes and night photography. The physical focal length remains equivalent to 23 mm, as does the optical image stabilization.
The further development of the telephoto module is considerably more interesting. The Xiaomi 15 already featured a 50 MP floating telephoto lens with a 60 mm focal length, although its use was more limited to portraits. With the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi has functionally expanded the floating lens design, enabling macro shots from a distance of 10 cm and an improved hybrid zoom range without sensor cropping.
The ultra-wide-angle camera also remains at 50 MP, but uses an updated sensor setup. While the Xiaomi 15 already offered a 115° ultra-wide-angle lens, the focus of the new generation is less on a wider field of view and more on consistent color matching between the cameras.
There's also a small but significant improvement in video capabilities. While the Xiaomi 15 already supported 8K and LOG video, Xiaomi is expanding the pipeline for stable 4K LOG and more consistent Dolby Vision recordings with the 17.
Display: more efficient panel instead of a bigger leap
The display size is slightly reduced from 6,36 inches (Xiaomi 15) to 6,3 inches, but remains functionally comparable. Both devices utilize LTPO technology with a 1-120 Hz refresh rate and very high peak brightness. However, the new M10 OLED panel is a significant improvement, which Xiaomi claims is approximately 23 percent more energy-efficient than the CrystalRes AMOLED panel of the Xiaomi 15, which boasts a maximum brightness of 3.200 nits.
The Xiaomi 17 simultaneously increases its peak brightness to 3.500 nits without proportionally increasing power consumption. The display resolution remains virtually unchanged at around 460 ppi.
Battery: biggest generational leap
The most significant technological advancement concerns the power supply. There's a major leap in battery capacity. Compared to the Xiaomi 15, which had a relatively small 5.240 mAh battery, the Xiaomi 17 boasts a capacity of 6.330 mAh, without any significant increase in weight or thickness (191 g at 8,06 mm).
This is made possible by a new silicon-carbon battery with higher energy density. The battery can be charged with up to 100 W via cable and still with up to 50 W wirelessly.
Performance: Qualcomm's elite platform
The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the 3nm process, combined with 12 GB LPDDR5X RAM and either 256 GB or 512 GB UFS 4.1 storage.
Compared to the previous Elite platform used in the Xiaomi 15, Qualcomm promises significant efficiency gains. Specifically, Xiaomi cites approximately 20 percent higher CPU performance with simultaneously improved power consumption. This should be particularly noticeable in camera and AI workloads.
Xiaomi has retained the slim design with an aluminum frame, but reduced the display bezels to approximately 1,18 mm, resulting in a noticeably more compact front compared to the Xiaomi 16. Additionally, the so-called Xiaomi Guardian Structure incorporates reinforced protective glass and IP68 certification for dust and water resistance.
