Qualcomm unveiled the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 at the Snapdragon Summit 2025. The high-end SoC is designed not only to raise the performance bar for Android smartphones, but also, for the first time, to match and in some cases even surpass Apple's current A-series chips in benchmarks.

3rd Gen Oryon CPU and new GPU architecture

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 uses the third-generation Oryon CPU, which Qualcomm claims is the fastest mobile CPU on the market. Compared to its predecessor, it delivers up to 20 percent more processing power with improved efficiency. This is complemented by a new Adreno GPU architecture that boosts graphics performance by 23 percent and a redesigned Hexagon NPU that is 37 percent faster in AI processing.

The chip is manufactured using the 3nm process (TSMC N3P) and achieves clock speeds of up to 4,6 GHz. The cluster structure consists of two prime cores (up to 4,6 GHz) and six performance cores (up to 3,62 GHz).

Focus on Agentic AI and new video features

Qualcomm is placing particular emphasis on on-device AI. With so-called agentic AI assistants, smartphones will be able to react contextually, anticipate user input, and provide recommendations in real time without data leaving the device.

Also new is the ability to record videos in the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec. This makes the chip more appealing to content creators who want to use professional workflows with extensive post-production options directly on their smartphone.

First devices coming soon

Among the first manufacturers to announce devices with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 are Samsung, Xiaomi, Honor, OnePlus, vivo, OPPO, and Sony. The first models are expected in the coming days.

It's noteworthy that, according to initial benchmarks, Qualcomm's fifth Elite generation is now on par with Apple's A-series for the first time. After years of iPhones holding a lead in CPU and GPU performance, Android could now catch up again.
