OpenAI is introducing Study Mode in ChatGPT today. This new learning feature is designed to not simply provide ChatGPT users with quick answers, but rather guide them step by step through complex topics.

ChatGPT as an interactive learning companion

OpenAI has just released the Agent Mode for ChatGPT rolled out, and the next feature, Study Mode, is already following. Especially in the educational sector, the AI assistant has become an integral part of everyday learning for many students. ChatGPT is increasingly being used as a learning aid for homework, exam preparation, or learning new concepts.

The new Study Mode aims to build on this by not simply providing the solution, but also encouraging self-reflection through targeted questions, food for thought, and hints. The answers are divided into structured, easily digestible sections to avoid overwhelm with complex topics.

In addition, the AI adapts to the individual knowledge level of the users based on their previous interactions or uploaded documents.

In collaboration with teachers and students

Teachers, educational researchers, and educators were involved in the development of Study Mode, which was designed to incorporate proven learning principles directly into the AI interaction. Quiz questions, comprehension checks, and individually tailored feedback help students retain what they've learned and apply it in new contexts.

OpenAI also tested Study Mode with students beforehand. Students particularly praised the ability to tackle difficult topics in small steps, ask questions at any time, and not feel like they're learning alone. It's essentially a "24/7 tutoring experience that never gets boring."

How to use Study Mode

Study Mode is available to all registered users in the Free, Plus, Pro, and Team versions. The feature will also be rolled out to ChatGPT Edu in the coming weeks.

The mode is activated directly via the tool menu. There, users can ask questions as usual, with the only difference being that the AI switches to learning mode and guides them step by step. Anyone can deactivate the function at any time.
