OnePlus 13: Everything you need to know about specs, price and accessories

Published by Julian Maas on the 7. January 2025

OnePlus unveiled the OnePlus 13 today and the message is clear: “Look, we’re still here and we’re doing it right this time!” With high-end specs, a refreshed design and a battery that seems to last forever, the OnePlus 13 aims to make the industry’s heavyweights sweat.

Design: Between chic and bold

At first glance, the OnePlus 13 looks familiar – flat sides, huge display and a touch of luxury. But then the back comes into play. The Midnight Ocean version (yes, that sounds just as fancy as it looks) combines faux leather with a silver frame.

OnePlus obviously wants the smartphone to be used without a case, at least until you realize that the bright blue synthetic leather isn't to everyone's taste. Those who prefer a classic look can opt for black and white with a glass back.

The device is also IP69 certified, which means you can use it in the shower, in the hot tub, or at a spontaneous garden party in the rain.

Display: Not so bright, Rüdiger!

The 6,82-inch LTPO AMOLED display sets the tone. With a peak brightness of 4.500 nits, it can be used in bright sunlight without any problems. The adaptive refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz ensures that everything runs smoothly - whether you're watching TikToks or scrolling through spreadsheets.

The curved edges can be seen as a small point of criticism. They may look nice, but they can lead to incorrect inputs. Palm rejection is still not quite perfect, even many years after the first curved smartphone. Perhaps a flagship smartphone with a flat display wouldn't be such a bad idea after all, right?

Performance: Fast. Really fast.

The OnePlus 13 has the new Snapdragon 8 Elite on board, paired with up to 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. It sounds like overkill, but it is. But anyone who uses their smartphone as a gaming rig, video editing machine and portable data storage will definitely be happy here.

Of course, all that power also brings heat. Reports suggest that the device gets a little warm after prolonged use - nothing to panic about, but something we'll keep an eye on.

Camera: Hasselblad sets the tone

With three 50 MP sensors and a partnership with Hasselblad, OnePlus wants to prove that they can seriously challenge the big names like Google and Samsung.

The main sensor is a Sony LYT-808 with a generous sensor size of 1/1.4 inches and optical image stabilization (OIS). This means that the sensor should be able to take great pictures with vivid colors and crisp details. Initial reports confirm this. During the day, the main camera delivers great results that are somewhere between "Wow, that's sharp!" and "That could have come straight out of a magazine."

The 3x telephoto lens is intended for portraits and closer subjects. Initial reports suggest that at 6x zoom it becomes a bit too shaky. OnePlus relies heavily on software and AI optimization here and unfortunately you can see that. As a result, images often appear soft or artificially smoothed.

Last but not least, there is the 120x zoom that OnePlus proudly advertises. In most cases, however, this is more of a gimmick than a useful function and so the results are more reminiscent of impressionistic paintings than sharp photos.

Battery and charging: The marathon runner among smartphones

The OnePlus 13 comes with a 6.000 mAh battery. In the smartphone world, this is comparable to an 80-liter tank in a small car. Combined with 100 W fast charging, the device is back to 30% in just under 100 minutes. And yes, OnePlus still includes a charger in the box! A little dig at Apple and Samsung? Perhaps.

It can charge wirelessly with up to 50 W. However, you need the appropriate accessory from OnePlus, which is equipped with a small but audible fan.

Software: OxygenOS 15

OxygenOS 15 is based on Android 15 and feels faster and cleaner than in recent years. OnePlus has also built in a few clever features, such as Pass Scan, which can be used to digitize printed flight tickets, for example.

In addition, the operating system is packed with numerous AI functions, including an AI-supported search that is intended to make digital life easier and an AI translator that can master pretty much every language in the world.

Not everyone is a fan of the “everything is AI” approach. Many of the new tools feel like gimmicks that you try out but quickly forget about.
