Nothing relies on voice: “Essential Voice” aims to replace typing

Nothing is bringing a new AI feature called Essential Voice to its smartphones, which could significantly reduce the need for keyboard typing. Instead of typing, users can now speak their texts.

Speaking should replace typing.

Typing on a smartphone is comparatively slow. On average, around 36 words per minute are achieved, while speaking is significantly faster at about 150 words per minute. Nevertheless, the keyboard still dominates.

Nothing aims to change that with Essential Voice. Instead of a traditional dictation function that often transcribes speech verbatim, including "uhms" and pauses, Essential Voice uses AI to directly process content. Sentences are restructured, filler words removed, and sentences formulated more clearly in real time.

No separate app is required. The function is accessible directly via the keyboard. The voice data is processed on Nothing's servers. The transmission is encrypted and without permanent storage.

Introducing Essential Voice

In addition to simple conversion, Essential Voice offers other features:

  •  Automatic correction: Spoken content is formulated in a way that is immediately understandable.
  •  Voice shortcuts: Custom commands for frequently used terms or texts
  •  Translation: Spoken content can be directly output as text in another language.
  •  100+ languages: including automatic detection

In the future, context-related functions, such as different writing styles for chat messages, emails or search queries, will be added.

Essential Voice will initially launch on the Telephone (3) and the Phone (4a) Pro available. The Telephone (4a) should follow shortly afterwards.
