Nothing focuses on the middle class: (3a) series on the way, Phone (3) comes later

Updated by Timo Altmeyer on February 2, 2025

It is now official that Nothing will not only present a new smartphone on March 4th, but a Phone (3a) series with several devices. Nothing confirmed this in a press release and a new community update. There are also first hints of the long-awaited Phone (3)!

Nothing's strategy with the Phone (3a) series

In the community update video, Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis explains that the (a) series is specifically aimed at users who do not need the latest high-end specifications, but are looking for the best possible user experience with a focus on camera, display, performance and design.

The success of the Phone (2a) and 2a Plus in 2024 has shown that there is a great demand for affordable but high-quality smartphones. With the new (3a) series, Nothing wants to further expand and optimize this market segment.

Nothing new about the Nothing Phone (3)?

Interestingly, the Nothing Phone (3) was also briefly mentioned at the end of the video. Evangelidis confirmed that it will still be released in 2025, but without giving an exact date. So it seems that Nothing is keeping its roadmap: first cover the mid-range with the Phone (3a) before the real flagship follows later in the year.

What's Next for Nothing

What can we expect from the Nothing Phone (3a) series?

Nothing has not yet revealed which models will be presented. So far, all information is based on leaks and speculation, which have already brought many details to light in recent days. Our colleagues at AndroidHeadlines report that the Nothing Phone (3a) series consists of two models:

  •  Nothing Phone (3a) 5G (Black/White) with 8/128 GB and 12/256 GB storage options
  •  Nothing Phone (3a) Pro 5G (Grey) with 12/256 GB

Both models are said to be equipped with a 6,7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, although rumors also suggest a smaller version for the Phone 3a (6,1-6,2 inches) and a larger one for the 3a Pro (6,8 inches).

In addition, the phone (3a) is said to use the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 – a departure from MediaTek, whose Dimensity SoC was still used in the predecessors Nothing Phone (2a) and (2a) Plus.

Camera upgrade: More than just mid-range?

A highlight of the new series could be the triple camera setup. The leaks speak of:

  •  50 MP main camera (probably identical to that of the Phone 2a)
  •  50 MP 2x telephoto lens (possibly without OIS)
  •  8 MP ultra-wide angle (a downgrade from the 50 MP of the Phone 2a)
  •  32 MP front camera for selfies

According to rumors, the Phone (3a) Pro will even have a periscope telephoto camera, which would be a first for Nothing. Exciting in any case, because the lack of optical zoom was one of the biggest criticisms of previous Nothing phones.

Design & Battery: Familiar look with detailed improvements

The biggest leaks so far come from the Indian online retailer Flipkart. They indicate that the design of the new models is based on the Phone (2a) - including a horizontally arranged triple camera and revised glyph lighting.

The phone (3a) is also said to offer a 5.000 mAh battery with 45W fast charging. Wireless charging has not yet been confirmed by a leak, but would be a welcome addition.

On March 4th we will finally find out what the Nothing Phone (3a) series really has to offer. At the same time, the upcoming Nothing Phone (3) remains a hot topic. Until then, we just have to wait and see which of the current rumors will come true. We will keep you updated!
