Nothing brings a piece of nostalgia to the Nothing Phone with Snake

Published by Timo Altmeyer on December 5, 2024

With a fresh, minimalist look, Nothing brings the legendary Nokia hit from the 90s to the home screen. Snake as we know and love it is now smarter, faster, more stylish and still just as addictive as it was back then.

Story of Snake

You know Snake. Everyone knows Snake. It was by Play on the old Nokia phones. Simple, endless and addictive. Originally inspired by arcade games like Blockade (1976), Snake landed on Nokia devices in 1997 and became a cult classic.

With simple gameplay and the constant hunt for the high score, Snake was the perfect break filler and showed us all that less is sometimes more. At the time, Snake was installed on over 400 million mobile phones, making it a symbol of the mobile phone revolution. Now the classic is experiencing a modern revival as a widget with Nothing.

From the community, for the community

What makes this widget special is its origin story. Two community members, Rahul Janardhanan (@raonehere) and Thomas Legendre (@WaterFlashRZ), worked with the Nothing software team to develop the widget. While Rahul brought creative widget ideas, Thomas contributed his experience from projects like Ear (Web) and the Simone Glyph Game This resulted in the Snake widget, which brings nostalgic charm to the home screen.

Snake in a new guise

The widget relies on simple controls and clever features:

  •  Swipe to Play: Use gestures to maneuver the snake.
  •  Dynamic challenges: The further you go, the faster the snake becomes. Classic snake feeling with a twist.
  •  Integrated features: Pause the game with a double tap, check your high score or play while you wait for the bus, for example.

Exclusively for Nothing fans

The Snake Game Widget is available exclusively for Nothing smartphones and can now be downloaded via the Nothing community page Requirement: The latest version of Nothing OS and Nothing Launcher should be running on your device.
