Muse S Athena gets a Deep Sleep Boost – Wearable designed to actively enhance deep sleep

Published by Timo Altmeyer on February 9, 2026

With the new "Deep Sleep Boost" feature, Muse expands its Muse S Athena mental fitness headband with a function specifically designed to improve deep sleep. Instead of just measuring sleep duration or movement, the wearable uses direct measurement of brain activity via EEG and reacts to it in real time.

EEG-based impulses specifically intervene in deep sleep.

The Muse S Athena continuously monitors brain activity throughout the night. When the system detects the beginning of a deep sleep phase, it emits virtually silent pink noise signals precisely synchronized with slow brainwaves. These acoustic impulses are designed to improve the stability and depth of slow-wave sleep without interrupting it.

Muse uses AI-powered models trained on extensive EEG datasets. These models not only recognize when deep sleep occurs, but also analyze its structure and dynamics. This allows the system to determine the optimal time for stimulation.

An integrated safety system automatically stops the stimulation if signs of sleep disturbance occur. Intensity and timing can be individually adjusted.

Combination of EEG and fNIRS for detailed brain data

Unlike traditional sleep trackers that primarily record movement and heart rate, Muse combines EEG with fNIRS. The latter measures the brain's oxygen supply. This results in a significantly more precise picture of neural activity during sleep.

This data forms the basis for personalized recommendations, guided exercises, and adaptive sleep support. According to the manufacturer, over 500.000 users worldwide use Muse devices, and the technology has been studied in more than 200 scientific studies.

Studies show significant improvements in deep sleep.

The underlying method is based on scientific research into acoustic stimulation during deep sleep. Controlled studies have shown that deep sleep activity can be increased by almost 50 percent. At the same time, memory performance improved overnight by around 20 percent.

Internal beta tests of Deep Sleep Boost also show measurable effects:

  • approximately 24 percent longer deep sleep sequences
  • approximately 42 percent more stable deep sleep episodes per minute
  • Overall, up to 76 percent more structured deep sleep

Besides duration, the continuity of deep sleep phases is crucial. Fragmented deep sleep is considered less restorative than stable, continuous sequences.

Holistic sleep system with additional EEG features

Deep Sleep Boost is part of a broader sleep ecosystem within the Muse S Athena. This includes several features that support different phases of the sleep cycle.

Sleep Assist uses EEG-based sound impulses to make falling asleep easier. According to the manufacturer, users report falling asleep up to 55 percent faster.

A smart alarm system is expected to use EEG signals from 2026 onwards to determine the optimal wake-up time. This should reduce morning grogginess.

In addition, the AI-supported coach "Enso" analyzes individual sleep data and provides understandable evaluations and recommendations.

Availability

Deep Sleep Boost is now included in the Muse S Athena and is available to iOS and Android users at no extra cost. Further information can be found on the official website. Muse website.
