Korean study reveals: Galaxy Z Fold7 is the world's thinnest foldable

Published by Timo Altmeyer on July 2nd, 2017.

Samsung can be happy, because the new Galaxy Z Fold7 is not only one of the most technically advanced foldables on the market, but now also officially the thinnest. At least, that's the result of a recent measurement by the Korean Consumer-Centered Enterprise Association (KCEA). Does this put an end to the millimeter dispute?

KCEA study HONOR vs. Samsung Hero

Study exposes sugarcoating

The result was published by the Korean Consumer-Centered Enterprise Association (KCEA), which independently measured the thickness of several current foldable devices. According to KCEA, the  Galaxy z fold7  When folded, it measures exactly 8,82 mm, making it 0,08 mm thinner than Samsung's own specifications. This is an unexpected PR coup for Samsung, as the measurement not only undercuts its own specifications but also exposes the competition.

HONOR is particularly affected, as its  Magic V5 (more info)  It is officially advertised as the "World's Thinnest Foldable" at 8,8 mm. However, in the KCEA measurement, the device came in at 9,34 mm, almost 0,54 mm thicker than stated. According to HONOR, this is because the advertised thickness only applies without screen protectors. A detail that is hardly relevant in everyday life, however, since no one uses a foldable without screen protectors.

Other manufacturers, such as Huawei, Vivo, and Xiaomi, also have their official specifications incorrect. Huawei's Mate X6 exceeds the stated value by a full 0,62 mm. Only Samsung's official figure was undercut.

Millimeter dispute with PR explosive power

The fact that the differences are often only a few tenths of a millimeter probably plays a minor role in practice. Nevertheless, the title of "thinnest foldable" is highly sought after and is often marketed by manufacturers as a technological masterpiece.

The KCEA aims to ensure greater transparency with its study. The measurements were taken with protective films in place, but without protruding camera modules, reflecting the realistic everyday use of the device. KCEA thus provides potential buyers with a more reliable basis for comparison, independent of embellished advertising claims.
