JIMMY Matrix M9 Pro: From a single device to a modular system

The Matrix M9 Pro has a removable raw water tank, filters the tap water using reverse osmosis, and then dispenses it either at room temperature or heated. We are already familiar with this same principle from the JIMMY R9 Pro, which we tested a few months ago.

The key difference lies on the side of the device. Additional modules can be connected via the so-called AquaLink system. Currently, this is primarily the S9 for chilled sparkling water. An ice cube module, the I9, is also available.

JIMMY M9 Pro with connected S9
With the S9 connected, the JIMMY M9 Pro requires a fair amount of space on the work surface.

A major advantage is that the system can be configured according to individual needs. Those who only want filtered and hot water can stick with the M9 Pro. Those who later want sparkling water can add the S9.

However, the whole system requires a fair amount of space. The M9 Pro measures 278 x 310 x 366 millimeters. The S9 adds another 198 millimeters in width. Together, the combination thus grows to almost 48 centimeters. That's significantly more footprint than a classic sparkling water maker or a single countertop filter.

Modular here means flexible, but by no means compact.

Besides the S9, there is also the I9 for ice cubes as a separate module.

Design and workmanship

Visually, we generally like the Matrix system. JIMMY continues to rely on a modern, largely enclosed housing and a clean front panel.

In direct comparison, we found the R9 Pro's control panel slightly more appealing. Its icons were simpler and therefore appeared more stylish overall. The M9 Pro is by no means cluttered, but its user interface feels a bit more functional.

JIMMY M9 Pro Display
The display is clear, but could be a bit simpler.

Otherwise, the system makes a solid and high-quality impression. The M9 Pro weighs 7,5 kilograms, the S9 an additional 3,33 kilograms. Once assembled, the combination stands correspondingly stable on the worktop.

No installation at the water connection is necessary. The M9 Pro is set up, the removable 5-liter raw water tank is filled with tap water, and the device is plugged in.

Matrix M9 Pro filter system

JIMMY remains true to its filtration system as well. It advertises a seven-stage water purification process, with these stages distributed across three cartridges.

The following will be installed:

  • an M2S composite filter with a planned lifespan of approximately twelve months
  • a Q2S mineralization filter, also with a lifespan of approximately twelve months
  • an RO-2.0S reverse osmosis membrane for up to 24 months
JIMMY M9 Pro Filter
The filters can be easily removed after taking off the top cover.

The composite filter first removes larger particles and substances such as chlorine or unpleasant odors. This is followed by the reverse osmosis membrane, which removes the majority of dissolved substances from the water.

JIMMY advertises the removal of up to 99,99 percent of certain contaminants, including heavy metals, PFAS, and chlorine. After osmosis, remineralization follows. This process is intended to restore minerals to the largely demineralized water and simultaneously round out the taste. Compared to tap water, the filtered water tastes significantly softer and more neutral.

JIMMY M9 Pro Water Test TDS
In the test, the TDS value of the water from the soda maker is significantly lower.

UV-C and TDS display

JIMMY uses UV-C light to ensure hygiene. This is intended to prevent the already purified water in the system from becoming recontaminated with germs due to extended periods of inactivity.

JIMMY M9 Pro UV-C
The UV-C lamp is located in the internal water tank.

Additionally, the M9 Pro monitors the TDS value of the raw water and the filtered water.

TDS stands for "Total Dissolved Solids," meaning the total amount of dissolved substances in the water. While this value doesn't directly indicate whether water is healthy or unhealthy, it's useful in a reverse osmosis system to understand how effectively the membrane reduces dissolved components.

5-liter tank and 3:1 wastewater ratio

The raw water tank holds 5 liters and can be completely removed from the device for filling.

JIMMY M9 Pro Water Tank
The side-mounted water tank can be lifted out using a handle.

As with any reverse osmosis system, a concentrate is produced during the filtration process, in which the retained substances collect. According to the manufacturer, the M9 Pro achieves a 3:1 ratio of purified water to concentrate.

For a countertop unit, this is a good value. The concentrate is not directed straight down a drain. Therefore, the unit doesn't require a fixed water connection. Instead, the more concentrated water remains in the raw water tank, which needs to be emptied and refilled regularly.

Hot water in seconds

One of the most practical features of the R9 remains unchanged in the Matrix M9 Pro: the integrated instantaneous water heater.

With a power output of 2.200 watts, it only heats the amount of water that is actually dispensed. Therefore, an entire tank does not need to be kept constantly warm.

There are seven temperature settings to choose from: room temperature, 45, 55, 65, 75, 85 and 98 °C. The water volume can be selected between 60, 150, 240 and 450 milliliters.

JIMMY M9 Pro hot water
Hot water flows at the touch of a button. The red light indicates this.

In practice, this combination remains a significant convenience advantage. For tea, for example, you can directly select 85 or 98 °C, while 45 °C is useful for preparing baby food, among other things.

The water is ready in just a few seconds. The M9 Pro can therefore actually replace a separate kettle in many households.

Matrix S9: Sparkling water as an expansion module

The new Matrix concept becomes more interesting with the S9. The 198 x 310 x 402 mm add-on block is connected to the M9 Pro via AquaLink and cannot be operated independently. The required water therefore comes directly from the M9 Pro's filter system.

JIMMY M9 Pro AquaLink connection
The S9 is connected to the M9 Pro via the extendable AquaLink connector for power and water.

Instead of carbonating tap water with a separate Sodastream, already filtered and remineralized water goes directly into the carbonator, which has a 0,75 liter cold water tank.

JIMMY specifies a target temperature of 10 to 15 °C. This also describes our practical experience quite well, as the water is pleasantly cool, but not really ice-cold, like water from a refrigerator.

Carbonation: Sodastream remains strong

The S9 works reliably during the actual carbonation process, but requires a little more patience than, for example, a Sodastream to achieve the same carbonation level.

Three sprays give us a result roughly in the "medium" range. Those who prefer a strong, classic sparkling water will need closer to six sprays. We achieve comparable results more quickly with a SodaStream.

On the other hand, CO₂ compatibility is a positive feature. JIMMY doesn't use exotic proprietary cartridges, but supports standard screw-on CO₂ cylinders. These cartridges are available in many supermarkets, drugstores, and beverage stores.

JIMMY M9 Pro Carbonated
Carbon dioxide is added to the screw-top bottle via the lever on the side.

According to JIMMY, one cylinder should be enough for up to 60 liters of sparkling water. As always, the actual amount depends heavily on how much carbonation you prefer.

Two water bottles included

The S9 comes with two reusable plastic bottles, each with a capacity of 500 milliliters.

JIMMY M9 Pro Water Bottles
The water bottles are made of BPA-free plastic.

However, caution is advised when cleaning. The plastic bottles are not heat-resistant and should therefore never be cleaned with boiling water.

Very hot water can deform or damage the plastic. For normal cleaning, warm water with a little dish soap is perfectly sufficient. Replacement bottles are available in the JIMMY online shop for the recommended retail price of €29,99.

CONCLUSION

A reverse osmosis filter alone wouldn't be very exciting these days; instead, the Matrix M9 Pro's modular design makes it interesting. The S9 adds sparkling water production, and later the system can even be expanded to include an ice maker.

In everyday use, it's particularly appealing that everything works without a fixed water connection and that standard CO₂ cylinders can be used. However, this combination does require a fair amount of counter space. The S9 could also be a bit more powerful when carbonating, and 10 to 15 degrees Celsius is cool, but not ice-cold.

Those who already drink filtered water and also use a water carbonator can effectively combine two devices with the Matrix system. However, those who only want hot and cold water don't necessarily need the modular design and should take a look at the R9 Pro or R9.
