Design and workmanship
Visually, HyperX remains true to the familiar Cloud Alpha design language. The over-ear headset features a closed-back design with sturdy aluminum headbands and high-quality plastic components. The construction appears robust and built for durability without being overly flashy. There are no creaking noises or loose parts. Everything fits snugly and precisely.
Weighing in at around 345 grams, the Cloud Alpha 2 Wireless remains comfortably wearable for a wireless headset in this price range. The softly padded earcups completely enclose the ears and ensure even pressure distribution. Even during extended gaming sessions, the headset remains comfortable without noticeable pressure points or bothersome heat buildup.
The controls are sensibly placed and easily accessible. The volume wheel, in particular, impresses with its clearly defined resistance, preventing unintentional adjustments during gameplay.
Delivery
HyperX includes a complete accessory package with the Cloud Alpha 2 Wireless, enabling both wireless and wired operation on various platforms. In addition to the headset itself, the package includes the new RGB base station, which serves as a wireless receiver and central control unit.
Also included is a detachable boom microphone for voice communication. For maximum compatibility, both a USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter are provided. A 3,5 mm audio cable is also included in the box. A quick start guide completes the package.
Battery life
The key distinguishing feature of the HyperX Cloud Alpha 2 Wireless is its exceptional battery life. With up to 250 hours of use, it significantly outperforms most wireless gaming headsets, which often need recharging after only 20 to 40 hours.
In everyday use, this means significantly fewer charging breaks. Even with intensive use over days or weeks, there's ample reserve power without having to constantly worry about the battery level. This is further supported by a fast-charging function that allows for several hours of use after just 30 minutes.
Sound quality and spatial representation
The sound is produced by large 53mm drivers. The separate chambers for bass and midrange/treble ensure clean reproduction and low distortion.
In gaming use, the headset impresses with a clear, detailed image and good spatial awareness. Footsteps, directional information, and ambient sounds can be precisely located, which is particularly advantageous in classic e-sports games like Counter-Strike.
The factory sound tuning is noticeably treble-heavy. Bass is present, but restrained. Only by manually adjusting the equalizer in the HyperX NGENUITY software can a more balanced sound with greater depth be achieved. The virtual surround sound (DTS Headphone:X) effectively expands the soundstage, but remains optional.
microphone quality
The detachable boom microphone delivers solid voice quality for voice chat and in-game communication. Voices sound slightly darker, but remain clear and easily understandable.
A positive feature is that the boom microphone remains active even in Bluetooth mode. This makes the headset well-suited for simultaneous use of gaming, phone calls, and media playback.
Considering the price point, the microphone quality remains only average. For streaming or professional voice recordings, an external solution is still recommended.
Dual connectivity and base station
A key upgrade over its predecessor is true dual connectivity. The headset can be simultaneously connected to a PC or console via 2,4 GHz wireless and to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth.
The new RGB base station is a wireless receiver, control center, and stylish desktop accessory all in one. It handles the wireless connection to the headset and replaces the traditional USB dongle with a significantly more versatile solution, allowing direct control of volume, microphone, and media via buttons and a rotary dial.
In combination with HyperX NGENUITY, the six buttons can also be freely assigned macros or individual functions, such as for quickly switching between headset and speakers, controlling voice chat, or media control. This saves time and makes operation somewhat more convenient.
Range and software
The wireless range is specified as up to 20 meters. The connection is stable and virtually latency-free, but somewhat weaker than its direct predecessor, especially over longer distances or across multiple floors.
The software is functionally necessary for EQ adjustments and the configuration of the base station, but in some parts it still seems improvable and not fully mature, which will probably change with future updates.
