Design and workmanship
Visually, the FreeBuds Pro 5 are based on the previous Pro line, but appear more refined. The so-called star-oval element on the outside adds a noticeable accent, but remains understated enough not to look gimmicky.
The grey, white, and sand gold color options feature a matte micro-texture that reduces fingerprints and gives a premium look. The dark blue version with vegan leather on the case stands out. It feels less technical and somewhat warmer, which certainly contributes to differentiation in the premium segment.
At 5,5 grams per earbud, the FreeBuds Pro 5 are pleasantly lightweight. In everyday use, it's particularly noticeable that they don't cause any pressure, even after extended wear. The Secure-Fit design distributes pressure evenly without forcing it too far into the ear canal.
The charging case also makes a solid impression. It remains compact enough for a trouser pocket, while the hinge and magnetic mechanism work precisely.
The earbuds themselves are IP57-rated for dust and water resistance, making them suitable for rain or workouts. The case offers IP54 protection against splashing water.
Dual-Engine ANC
In practice, the advantage is less about a spectacular "moment of silence" and more about consistent damping. On the train, the constant rolling noise is significantly reduced without any audible readjustment or disruptive pumping.
Even in changing environments, such as in a café or on a busy street, the FreeBuds Pro 5 remain quietly tuned. Individual noises are dampened without the system suddenly intervening strongly.
Another pleasant feature is the minimal pressure. Some ANC systems create a noticeable vacuum in the ear. With the FreeBuds Pro 5, this effect remains moderate, which is significantly more comfortable during extended use.
Compared to other premium models, the ANC performance is therefore in the upper category. It may seem less spectacular, but it is consistent and suitable for everyday use.
Transparency mode and everyday life
The awareness mode sounds well-balanced. Voices are transmitted clearly without sounding artificially boosted. The sound remains intelligible, especially in urban environments.
Adaptive volume control is a feature that's often underestimated. In quiet rooms, the playback volume is slightly reduced, while in traffic it's increased. This eliminates the need for constant manual adjustments.
sound quality
The FreeBuds Pro 5 don't aim for a quick "wow" factor in their sound, but rather a balanced tuning. This might seem less spectacular at first, but proves more pleasant in the long run.
L2HC, LDAC, AAC, and SBC are supported. This is particularly interesting for Android users, as LDAC and L2HC enable higher data rates.
bass
The bass is controlled and precise. Electronic music gets enough punch without the upper bass sounding artificially bloated.
Middle
Voices are clearly in the foreground. Podcasts benefit from the clean presentation, and acoustic instruments also sound natural.
Heights
The highs are well-defined without sounding harsh. The sound remains stable even at higher volumes.
Spatial representation
For true wireless in-ear headphones, the soundstage is pleasantly wide. Individual instruments are easily distinguishable, and the overall sound doesn't feel cramped.
sound profiles
The four presets – Balanced, Voice, Classical, and Bass – audibly alter the sound signature. Balanced remains the most neutral setting. The Bass profile is particularly suitable for louder environments without overpowering the sound.
Phone quality
Three microphones per earbud work together with AI-based speech isolation. In practice, conversations remain clearly understandable even in noisy street environments.
Wind noise is effectively reduced. The voice remains natural, without sounding heavily compressed. This is a crucial point, especially for frequent phone users.
Connectivity and Multipoint
Bluetooth 6.0 ensures stable connections. Dual-device connectivity works reliably. Switching between laptop and smartphone is automatic. Users who regularly switch between their work device and smartphone save themselves the hassle of manually reconnecting.
Battery and running time
With up to 9 hours of battery life without ANC and 6 hours with ANC, the FreeBuds Pro 5 perform above average. In realistic mixed use, around 5 to 6 hours are achievable.
The total battery life of 38 hours without ANC is realistically sized. Charging is done via USB-C or wirelessly.
