HONOR relies on AI: billion-dollar investment and seven years of updates for smartphones

Published by Timo Altmeyer on the 4. March 2025

HONOR is serious about AI. The Chinese tech group not only announced a strategic realignment at the MWC 2025, but also presented a massive investment in the future. The company plans to invest an impressive 10 billion US dollars in the next five years in the development of an AI-based device ecosystem. At the same time, HONOR promises seven years of Android and security updates for its Magic series.

Full Speed AI: The HONOR ALPHA PLAN

This year's MWC was once again all about artificial intelligence and HONOR doesn't just want to play along, but redefine the rules. That's exactly why HONOR has introduced the three-stage ALPHA PLAN:

  1.  The "intelligent smartphone" as a central AI hub that adapts to user habits and independently carries out tasks - such as restaurant bookings based on calendar data and traffic forecasts.
  2.  An expansion of AI to other device classes, including AI-optimized laptops, tablets, and wearables.
  3.  An open, cross-brand platform that enables a seamless AI experience across different manufacturers.

Part of the plan is, among other things, the introduction of a dedicated AI agent that acts as a personal assistant. The first applications have already been shown. The AI can automatically coordinate appointments, make bookings or translate content in real time.

HONOR's new AI technologies at a glance

In addition to the big vision, HONOR presented concrete innovations that will soon be used in future devices:

  •  AiMAGE: An image processing technology that combines cloud AI and on-device AI. Among other things, this improves image sharpness in telephoto shots by up to 50%.
  •  AI Upscale: A new feature that can restore old photos in high quality.
  •  AI-powered file transfer: An AirDrop alternative that works across platforms, whether Android or iOS.
  •  Deepfake detection: A security feature designed to identify fake images and manipulated videos.

Many of these features are implemented in close cooperation with Google Cloud and Qualcomm, who support HONOR's AI platform with additional computing power.

7 years of updates: HONOR joins the elite

In addition to the AI offensive, HONOR is pursuing a strategy that should be particularly attractive to European customers: seven years of Android and security updates for the Magic series. This puts HONOR alongside Google and Samsung, who also rely on long-term software support.

In the EU, such an update policy will soon become mandatory anyway. The new Ecodesign Regulation, which will apply from June 2025, requires manufacturers, among other things, to provide spare parts for smartphones for at least seven years and software updates for at least five years after a device is no longer on the market.
