Updated by Timo Altmeyer on the 12. October 2022

Google has introduced the latest generation of Pixel products. With the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, a new generation of smartphones awaits us again this year, in which the design, hardware and software have been further developed.

Embedded in glass

The design of the new Pixel smartphones looks familiar, because overall Google is sticking with the case of the previous series. However, there are also differences.

Instead of a two-tone back of the housing, the color of the camera bar has been adjusted. The camera bar of the Pixel 7 Pro is shiny and therefore more susceptible to fingerprints, the camera bar of the Pixel 7 is matte. Both the Pixel 7 Pro and the Pixel 7 are available in the colors “Obsidian” and “Snow”.

Additionally, the Pixel 7 Pro is available in the special color “Hazel”. The Pixel 7 is available in the special color “Lemongrass”.

The front and back are made of glass. Strictly speaking, made of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, which can withstand a lot in terms of scratch and impact resistance. There is a metal frame between the glass sandwich. According to protection class IP68, both Pixel smartphones are waterproof and dustproof.

Different display sizes

The Google Pixel 7 houses a flat 6,3" OLED display with 1080 x 2400 pixel resolution and 90 Hz refresh rate. With a size of 155,6 x 73,2 x 8,7 mm, it is the more compact device in the new Pixel series.

The Google Pixel 7 Pro has a curved 6,7" OLED display with a resolution of 3120 x 1440 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. This makes the display somewhat sharper and smoother. However, the housing size is also smaller at 162,9 x 76,6. 8,9 x XNUMX mm slightly higher.

The displays of both devices support HDR and shine with an average of 1000 nits. At peak, the Pixel 7 Pro achieves a display brightness of 1500 nits, the Pixel 7 a brightness of 1400 nits.

Google Tensor G2

At the heart of the new Pixel smartphones is the Google Tensor G2 chip. The bespoke mobile platform is purpose-built for the Google Pixel devices' AI-powered photo, video and voice control capabilities.

Google claims that the new G2 chip offers 60% faster and 20% more efficient machine learning performance compared to the original Tensor chip. On the security level, the Tensor G2 is supported by a Titan M2 RISC-V chip to effectively protect users from attacks.

Connectivity is 5G mmWave + Sub 6GHz mobile communications, Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC.

The Pixel 7 Pro comes with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, while the Pixel 7 only has 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM. The storage options are fixed at 128GB and 256GB UFS3.1 storage on both. None of the smartphones support microSD for memory expansion.

As far as battery capacities go, the Pixel 7 Pro offers a 6mAh battery like the Pixel 5000 Pro, while the Pixel 7 comes with a smaller 4355mAh battery. According to Google, the battery life is between 24 and 72 hours. Both smartphones can be charged to 30% in 30 minutes with 50W. Qi wireless charging and reverse charging is possible.

Pixel Camera Experience

As with all Pixel smartphones to date, the camera also plays an important role. Both smartphones share the same 50 MP main camera with a 1/1,31" sensor size, 1,2 μm pixel size and f/1.85 aperture.

For ultra-wide-angle shots, both the Pixel 7 Pro and the Pixel 7 have a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera with a pixel size of 1,25 μm and an f/2.2 aperture. The field of view of the Pixel 7 Pro is slightly larger at 125,8° (Pixel 7 114°). The reason is the macro focus, in which the ultra wide-angle camera acts as a macro camera.

The biggest difference between the cameras of the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 7 is the additional 48 MP telephoto lens (0,7 μm pixel size, f/3.5 aperture) of the Pixel 7 Pro, which enables a 5x optical zoom and up to 30x digitally enlarged. Both devices have camera features such as Motion Mode, Real Tone, Photo Unblur, Magic Eraser as well as Night Sight. Both smartphones record videos in HDR and 4K up to 60 frames-per-second.

For selfies and video calling, the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 7 offer a 10,8 MP front camera with a fixed focus, 1,22 μm pixel size, f/2.2 aperture and 92,8° ultra-wide-angle field of view.
