Essential Phone - All information about the Andy Rubin smartphone

For many weeks the rumor mill was simmering about the first smartphone from Android inventor "Andy Rubin". Today the Essential Phone was finally released and as expected, the smartphone is one of this year's flagship models!

Essential Phone

2K edge-to-edge display

The fact that the Essential Phone has built in an edge-to-edge display could already be seen in the first teasers. As of today, it is now known that the smartphone will have a high-resolution 2K (2560 x 1312) LTPS display built in, which has a display diagonal of 141.5 inches with a housing size of just 71.1 x 7.8 x 5.73 mm. This makes the smartphone even more compact than a conventional device with a 5-inch display diagonal! The small recess of the front camera, which is still above the display on the Essential Phone and is literally surrounded by it, is particularly visually striking. With a luminance of 500 nits, the display shines above average and should remain legible even in strong sunshine. The contrast ratio is typically 1: 1000. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Snapdragon 835 and 4GB memory

As befits a high-end smartphone, the Essential Phone is equipped with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 835 processor. This octa-core processor, manufactured using the 10nm process, is one of the most powerful smartphone processors currently on the market and is also in the international model of the Samsung Galaxy S8 installed. Support is provided by 4GB of RAM, which will ensure smooth multitasking. For internal storage, Essential relies on 128GB UFS 2.1 storage. There is no provision for memory expansion.

connectivity

The smartphone supports all common network standards up to LTE. Of course, the device is also equipped for the LTE bands that are common in this country. At the same time, 4 microphones ensure the best possible call quality. What is not supported, however, is the use of two SIM cards. Here the slot only holds a nano SIM. The built-in WiFi module supports dual-band AC and also the new MU-MIMO. Bluetooth is supported up to the new standard 5.0 LE, which is characterized above all by higher data rates and an improved range. The Essential Phone uses GPS and GLONASS to determine its position. To what extent the smartphone copes with Beidou and Galileo is not known. The physical connection option amounts to a USB-C socket. Following the trend, the device does not have a 3.5 mm headphone connection!

The sensory equipment is comparable to other flagship models. In addition to the typical brightness sensor, proximity sensor, gyroscope and acceleration sensor, there is also a barometer and a magnetometer. A fingerprint scanner is located on the back of the housing. NFC is available.

Cameras

The Essential Phone has a dual main camera, consisting of a 13 megapixel RGB color sensor and another, monochrome 13 megapixel sensor. Essential does not provide any information about the sensors used. It is known that the main camera has an aperture of f / 1.85, there will be a hybrid autofocus consisting of a PDAF, IRAF and contrast AF and that the main camera will be able to record 4K videos at 30 frames per second. The extent to which there is optical image stabilization is also not yet known. The front camera consists of an 8 megapixel image sensor of unknown origin. The aperture is f / 2.20. The front camera is also able to record high-resolution 4K videos.

Titanium case, battery and accessories

A housing frame made of titanium and a housing back made of ceramic ensure an attractive design. In contrast to most of the aluminum housings of other smartphones, Essential promises that the housing is more shock and break resistant. The battery has a capacity of 3040 mAh and can be charged within a very short time using an unspecified quick charge function. The accessories announced so far are a wireless charging station and an attachable 360 ° camera.

Price and availability

Essential Phone Colors

The manufacturer has not yet announced when the Essential Phone will appear. A publication can probably be expected in the coming months. If you don't want to wait any longer, you can pre-order the smartphone on the official homepage. The smartphone is available in a total of 4 colors and costs $ 699 (around € 626). As a limited-time offer, the smartphone is available as a set with the 360 ° camera for $ 749 (around € 670). As soon as we hear more about the Essential Phone or even get our hands on a test copy, the news and the test will follow at this point!

Not only narrower edges than the Samsung, the absolute display area is also larger (display ratio 19: 10 vs 18,5: 5) and I personally find the aspect ratio even more charming (about 2: 1 aspect ratio is just too narrow for me)
By the way, only I have the feeling that the manufacturers only make the aspect ratio so extreme, so that they can advertise with large diagonals? Eg Galaxy S8: With the classical aspect ratio 16: 10 the display area would be larger with the same diagonal 14,3%. I think enough, not to round it off.
      Take care ^^
