ATH-R70xa (349 €): Lightweight construction for the studio
The Audio-Technica R70xa is the new top model "Made in Japan" that is aimed primarily at sound professionals. The housing made of carbon composite resin is designed to dampen vibrations, while the extended frequency range (5–40.000 Hz) is designed to capture even ultra-high frequency details such as the rustling of a synthesizer controller.
Instead of relying on acoustic chambers, Audio-Technica relies entirely on the driver performance. According to the manufacturer, this should minimize distortion and guarantee more "directness".

At just 199 grams, the headphones are light enough not to be a burden even after eight hours of mixing. The newly designed headband and the replaceable velour pads are intended to increase comfort, although this time the 3D wing system of earlier models has been omitted. The detachable cable with locking mechanism on both sides is practical for the studio. Anyone who has ever tripped over cables in the studio will appreciate this.
Specs at a glance:

ATH-R50x (169 €): Bass-heavy all-rounder
The cheaper R50x uses revised drivers from the original R70x, but relies on other strengths in terms of sound. A "surprising bass power" and "precise upper mids" are said to make it an all-rounder for vocals and guitar tracks. At 207 grams, it remains light and, as an all-rounder between the studio and the couch, it comes with two cables (3,0 m and 1,2 m).
Specs at a glance:
- Open design with precise bass reproduction

- Two detachable cables for more flexibility
- 6,3 mm jack adapter and carrying case included
- Price: 169 euros

Audio-Technica remains true to itself and does not dare to experiment too much with the new generation of headphones. Instead, there are some useful improvements. The ATH-R70xa stands out for its precision, which is particularly interesting for professional users, while the ATH-R50x is an all-rounder that is more accessible to a wider audience. Both models are now available from Thomann.
